While writing this blog on the first day of Shravan of 2013 , I have to make one thing very clear . I am ashamed today that I am unable to write my blogs regularly and more frequently . After I started in March 2009 , only once could I write 31 blogs in a month . It was in December 2012 . And the lowest was 1 blog in March 2009 . It was the month when I started tentatively , hesitatingly and with lots of doubt .

Today as I write this blog , I remember two other avid bloggers , whom I admire and try to follow . They are ; Shri Lal Krishna Advani and Shri Amitabh Bachchan . Amitabh Bachchan would be completing 71 years in October 2013 . And he writes and posts 1 blog daily . Shri Advani ji would be completing 86 years in November 2013 . And he writes minimum 2 blogs every week . And here I am …….. I would be completing 61 years in December 2013 . I am 10 years junior to Mr. Bachchan and 25 years junior to Shri Advani ji . And still I am not so consistent and regular like them . Sometimes I could write only 3 / 4 blogs in a month . I , instead of admonishing myself , try to convince that I am busy . Could I be busier than Shri Lal Krishna Advani or Mr. Amitabh Bachchan ? No I am not . I sometimes procrastinate . I am definitely busy but not as busy as Shri Advani ji or Mr. Bachchan . Apart from writing blogs , Shri Advani ji wrote a voluminous autobiography also , which was published in March 2008 . Advani ji’s autobiography , ” My Country , My Life “ is a 1040 page tome . It became the best seller book in non-fiction category . Till date it sold more than 1,000,000 copies . Incredible ! Unbelievable ! A remarkable feat by a 86 year young national leader and ex Dy. Prime Minister of India .

Apart from Shri Advani ji and Mr. Bachchan , I am a huge fan of Roger Ebert , the American film critic . He was so prolific . How could he managed ? Apart from watching all the released films of the particular week , he wrote reviews , articles , columns , interviews and books , yes books . He wrote everything with gusto and regular alacrity . If he could do it , why can’t I ?

I follow Vir Sanghvi too . He writes articles in newspapers . Writes regular weekly columns about politics , food , and good life . He travels a lot and comes and writes travelogues . How is he managing ? Can I have gumption to say that I am more busy than these eminent writers and columnists . No . Its sheer inertia , laziness and procrastination .

Therefore on the first day of holy Shravan , I make a resolution that from now onwards I will be more regular . As least a target of 2 blogs per week or 8 blogs per month is not difficult . It is achievable . Holy Shravan of 2013 will mark a new beginning in my life as a blogger .

AMEN !!!!

I am writing this blog on the 1st day of Shravan and when I will post it , it will be 2nd day of Shravan .

Through my blogs I would like to serve VIDUR Acting Institute , which is known as Vidur’s Kreating Charakters . VIDUR Editing Studio , VIDUR Club and VIDUR Theatre would also benefit from this endeavour .

Amar Gopal Bose

November 2, 1929 – July 12, 2013

He was an Indian American academic and entrepreneur. An electrical engineer and sound engineer, he was a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for over 45 years. He was also the founder and chairman of Bose Corporation. In 2011, he donated a majority of the company to MIT in the form of non-voting shares to sustain and advance MIT’s education and research mission.

In 2007 he was listed in Forbes 400 as the 271st richest man in the world, with a net worth of $1.8 billion .

Following graduation, Bose became an Assistant Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. During his early years as a professor, Bose bought a high-end stereo speaker system in 1956 and he was disappointed to find that speakers with impressive technical specifications failed to reproduce the realism of a live performance. This would eventually motivate his extensive speaker technology research, concentrating on key weaknesses in the high-end speaker systems available at the time. His research on acoustics led him to invent a stereo loudspeaker that would reproduce, in a domestic setting, the dominantly reflected sound field that characterizes the listening space of the audience in a concert hall. His focus on psychoacoustics later became a hallmark of his company’s audio products.

The company Bose founded now employs more than 9,000 people worldwide and produces products for home, car, and professional audio, as well as conducting basic research in acoustics and other fields. Bose never made his company public, and since the company was privately held Bose was able to pursue risky long-term research. In a 2004 interview in Popular Science magazine, he said: “I would have been fired a hundred times at a company run by MBAs. But I never went into business to make money. I went into business so that I could do interesting things that hadn’t been done before.”

In addition to running his company, Bose remained a professor at MIT until 2001. In 2011, Bose donated a majority of the company’s non-voting shares to MIT on the condition that the shares never be sold.

It is sad that before his death , the name Amar Gopal Bose and his achievements were unknown to me . It is so shameful that I never ever heard or knew about him earlier . I take pride in the fact that my general knowledge is satisfactory , if not very good . But how come I never knew him ? How come his life and gigantic accomplishments by passed me ?

I saw a tweet by Mr. Shekhar Kapoor on the day he died and slowly , as several other luminaries started tweeting about him , I got to know about his life and about his company ” Bose ” . I knew Bose sound system and its legendary audio products . In fact I use them in my car . But it never occurred to me that it belonged to some Indian . I assumed that Bose is some unknown word of either German or Spanish origin . It never occurred to me that Bose represents our own famous Bengali name .

Amar Gopal Bose died on Since July 12 and I am writing and posting this obituary on July 28 . A full 16-day-gap in unexplainable and unpardonable . Now I have decided to be more regular . I hope this type of procrastination will never be my way of working .

On behalf of all the students and staff of VIDUR Acting Institute , which is known as Vidur’s Kreating Charakters , I bow my head in reverence and offer my heartfelt condolences to the family of Mr. Bose .

Once a prolific film maker , Sudhakar Bokade died on July 07 , 2013 at the age of 57 . He came to limelight after the stupendous success of his third venture ” Saajan ” [ 1991 ] .

He produced many films like : ” Izzatdaar ” [ 1990 ] , ” Nyay Anyay ” [ 1990 ] , ” Saajan” [ 1991 ] , ” Prahaar ” [ 1991 ] , ” Sapne Sajan Ke ” [ 1992 ] , ” Dhanwaan ” [ 1993 ] , ” Kanyadaan ” [ 1993 ] , ” Sauda ” [ 1995 ] , ” Yeh Pyaar Hi To Hai ” [ 2000 ] , ” Sanam Teri Kasam ” [ 2000 ] and incomplete and yet to be released film ” Kalinga ” [ 1996 ] , a directorial debut of Dilip Kumar .

Jagdish Raj , the famous police officer of Bollywood, passed away on July 28, 2013 at his Juhu residence following respiratory ailment. He was 85. Jagdish Raj was born as Jagdish Raj Khurana in 1928 in the town of Sargodha , which is now in Pakistan.

He holds a Guinness World Record record for being the most type-cast actor. He played a police inspector in 144 films. Though he occasionally played a villain .

His daughter Anita Raj was also an actress. He is survived by two daughters and a son.

In this exclusive club , I have 7 students of mine . They are ; Kareena Kapoor [ 4 Films ] , Priyanka Chopra [ 3 Films ] , Katrina Kaif [ 2 Films ] , Ranbir Kapoor [ 2 Films ] , Hritik Roshan [ 1 Film ] , Anushka Sharma [ 1 Film ] and Kalki Koechlin [ 1 Film ] .

Director Sajid Khan [ 1 Film ] and Music Director Shekhar Ravjiani [ 1 Film ] are also there in this club .

Thus out of 22 films in 100 Crore Club , my students are there in 14 films . It is unprecedented . And it comes to a whopping 64 % success ratio . Out of 12 actors , who are there in this club , 7 are my students . It brings my success ratio to 59 % in this category too .

I am bringing out above facts with all the humility at my command . It’s not like blowing one’s own trumpet . In this field of film acting training , some acting trainers have become experts in false claims . Thus it becomes necessary to post facts for the gullible public . In this field where some acting trainers have metamorphosed into pathological liars , it has become imperative to make general public aware of the facts . So I am presenting the facts .

I know that fringe-players will cringe again and immediately start their vitriolic campaign . Upstarts will start hurling abuses . Uncouth will unfurl their flag of arrogance . Stone -pelters will be active again . And I will be subjected to choicest cuss words by uncultured and self-appointed descendents of Stanislavski . But It hardly matters .

Jagdish Raj , the permanent and quintessential cop of Hindi films , passed away on July 28, 2013 at his Juhu residence following respiratory ailment. He was 85.

He was born in 1928 in the town of Sargodha, now in Pakistan. His daughter Anita Raj was also a Bollywood actress.

I have seen many films of Jagdish Raj . But I first noticed him in a commercial campaign . It was for CHARMINAR Cigarette . He was playing a press photographer in that campaign and his tag line is still ringing in my mind - ” MEHNAT JAB KARTA HOON , TO TASALLI POORI CHAHTA HOON . ”

I can still describe the scene of his ad for a discerning connoisseur of films . With a camera on his shoulder and sweat on his face , he was running on the roads of Bombay [ now Mumbai ] and clicking photos . He stops at a signal , lights a cigarette and says , ” MEHNAT JAB KARTA HOON , TO TASALLI POORI CHAHTA HOON . ” His sweat-filled face is still fresh in my memory .

I , later on , came to know that he is Jagdish Raj . Gradually I saw many of his films and became acquainted with his body of work .

It sad that he is gone . Though he played his innings well and completed his journey satisfactorily but departure of a known figure of our films is sad .

A well-known costume designer of 60s and 70s , Mani Rabadi died this month on August 06 , 2013 . She was older sister of yesteryear actress Nargis Rabadi a.k.a. Shammi or Shammi aunty .

Much before the advent of Manish Malhotra and Neeta Lulla , long before Anna Singh and Anaita Shroff Adajania and eons ago Niharika Khan , there was Mani Rabadi , who along with Bhanu Athaiya , became couturier to the stars in the Golden Age of Hindi Cinema.

Making her debut in 1967 with the Dev Anand starrer ” Jewel Thief “ , she worked all the way in to the 90s ending her career with the mega hit ” Hum Aapke Hain Koun ” .

She worked for 27 long years in this unpredictable and risk-driven industry . She successfully withered changing times , fluid tastes and all the changing patterns from ” Jewel Thief ” [ 1967 ] till ” Hum Aapke Hain Kaun ” [ 1994 ] .

Born as Mani Rabadi in a family of Parsi priests , she was only a kid when her father died . Her mother made a living by cooking at religious functions. Later on , along with her younger sister Shammi , Mani Rabadi worked in toy factories after school to source their tuition fees. After school time, they worked at offices, ran a magazine and did odd jobs. Mani also worked with the Indian People’s Theatre Association and did some Gujarati films.

The bottom line here is , could Jeetendra have seized Bombay by storm without his famous tight white pants ? Vyjayantimala’s red saree from ” Jewel Thief ” is still fresh in our memories . Amitabh Bachchan’s tuxedo in the song My name is Anthony Gonsalves from the film ” Amar Akbar Anthony ” or Rishi Kapoor’s costumes from the same film are still there in our memory lane . Polka dot waist – coat of Amitabh Bachchan in ” Don ” is unforgettable . You remember his iconic song Khai ke paan Banaraswalla …… from the film and you will surely remember his polka dot waist-coat . You will never forget any costume of legendary Helen . Mani Rabadi designed innumerable costumes for her in films . They were revealing but not vulgar .

Her work is so diverse, so eye-catching, and so unpredictable . Mani Rabadi is unarguably genius. It is sad that her death is not widely reported in newspapers . Today , when Parsi community is celebrating Navroz [ thier new year ] , I am writing this obituary of Mani Rabadi , one of the prominent member of Parsi community .

GURGAON – NATIONAL CAPITAL REGION – INDIA AUGUST 23 , 2013 10.45 P.M.

There was an innocuous news in the national newspapers last week . Subramanian Swamy merged his Janata Party with the Bharatiya Janata Party . There were some sarcastic remarks about the defunct party merging with BJP . Some chose to ignore the news . And some kept silence after initial taunt . But for me it opened floodgate of memories of some bygone era . Some cherished memories of my young days came to knock at my door . I became nostalgic and started remembering those eventful days in the history of our nation .

Raj Narain, a socialist leader, had filed a legal writ alleging electoral malpractice against Indira Gandhi in 1971. On 12 June 1975, Allahabad High Court found her guilty of using corrupt electoral practices in her 1971 election victory over Narain in the Rae Bareli constituency. She was barred from contesting any election for the next six years. Economic problems, corruption and the conviction of Gandhi led to widespread protests against the Congress ( I ) government, which responded by imposing a State of Emergency in the country . The rationale was that of preserving national security.

However, the government introduced press censorship, postponed elections and banned strikes and rallies. Opposition leaders such as Jayaprakash Narayan, Jivatram Kripalani and Morarji Desai were imprisoned, along with thousands of other political activists.

When the State of Emergency was lifted and new elections called in 1977, opposition political parties such as the Congress (O), Bharatiya Jana Sangh, Bharatiya Lok Dal as well as defectors from the Congress ( I ) , known as Congress For Democracy ( CFD ) joined to form the Janata party, which won a sweeping majority in the Indian Parliament. Raj Narain defeated Indira Gandhi at Rae Bareilly in those elections.

Congress (Urs) leaders like Devaraj Urs joined Janata Party in the later stage.

In the general election held after the end of the state of emergency in 1977, the Janata party defeated Congress ( I ) to form the first non-Congress government in the history of the Republic of India. I heard the news of formation of Janata Party , defeat of Indira Gandhi and the Congress on radio . I still remember , I didn’t sleep a wink , and kept on listening the news throughout the night . Even today I am unable to forget that feeling after listening that Invincible Indira Gandhi got defeated and the Congress will no longer going to rule us .

The Janata Party formed the government with Morarji Desai as prime minister. Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who had become the leader of the Jana Sangh after Deen Dayal Upadhyaya’s death in 1967, was appointed as the external affairs minister in the new government.

The new Janata-led government reversed many Emergency-era decrees and opened official investigations into Emergency-era abuses. Although several major foreign policy and economic reforms were attempted, continuous in-fighting and ideological differences made the Janata government unable to effectively address national problems. By mid-1979, Prime Minister Morarji Desai was forced to resign and his successor Chaudhary Charan Singh failed to sustain a parliamentary majority as alliance partners withdrew support. Popular disenchantment with the political in-fighting and ineffective government led to the resurgence of Gandhi and her new Congress (I) party, which won the general election called in 1980.

The Janata government did not last long, though. Morarji Desai resigned as prime minister, and the Janata party was consequently dissolved.

Bharatiya Janata Party (1980-)

In 1980, the leaders and workers of the former Bharatiya Jana Sangh, founded the Bharatiya Janata Party with Atal Bihari Vajpayee as its first president .

Although the original Janata Party fragmented and eventually dissolved, modern political parties continue to invoke its legacy. Subramanian Swamy kept the name Janata Party , and was the National President of the party .

The irony of the situation or fate is that Bharatiya Jan Sangh members were forced to leave Janata Party on the pretext of dual membership . They chose to remain loyal to RSS ideology and left Janata Party and formed Bharatiya janata Party in 1980 . Quirk of the fate forced the same Janata Party to merge itself with the Bharatiya Janata Party . In August 2013, when the news came that the party was merged with the Bharatiya Janata Party , I just smiled .

Destiny plays strange games . Sometimes even bizarre games . BJP was formed after several swayamsevaks came out of Janata Party on the issue of dual membership and 33 years later , the parent body came and merged itself with the BJP .

Issue of Dual membership and the cacophony that followed , is finished forever . Socialists , who raised the issue , are extinct now . And last but not the least , Janata Party ceases to exist .

Very soon I am going to tell the tale of this bizarre chapter of our history to the students and staff of VIDUR Acting Institute , which is known as Vidur’s Kreating Charakters and VIDUR Editing Studio , VIDUR Club and VIDUR Theatre .

GURGAON – NATIONAL CAPITAL REGION – INDIA AUGUST 25 , 2013 11.50 A.M.

Today as I am sitting in Gurgaon , Haryana [ National Capital Region ] and waiting for the cab to arrive and take me to Indira Gandhi International Airport , New Delhi , I cannot miss the irony of the situation .

It is uncanny that this blog , which is an obituary of Shri Arun Gandhi , is being written in Gurgaon . Shri Arun Nehru died in Gurgaon . This blog is being written on August 25 , 2013 . Shri Arun Nehru died exactly one month before . He breathed his last on July 25 , 2013 in Gurgaon .

Arun Nehru

24 April 1944 – 25 July 2013

I would say that he was a reluctant politician and after retiring as a politician , he became a columnist and he was an excellent columnist .

He was member of the 7th and 8th Lok Sabhas from Rae Bareli on an Indian National Congress ticket . He , after resigning from the Congress , was member of the 9th Lok Sabha from Bilhaur as a Janata Dal leader.

Arun Nehru was born in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, and had worked in business for 17 years , before he entered politics . He was president of the Jenson and Nicholson group at the time when his aunt , Indira Gandhi, persuaded him to change career .

As a representative of the Indian National Congress , Shri Arun Nehru was a member of Parliament in the 7th Lok Sabha (1980-84) and 8th Lok Sabha (1984-89) . Aside from sitting on various consultative committees during this time , he was Union Minister of State for Energy (December 1984—September 1985,) and for Home Affairs (September 1985—October 1986) .

Later due to some differences with his cousin Shri Rajiv Gandhi , he left the Indian National Congress for Janata Dal and was elected to the 9th Lok Sabha, where he was Union Minister for Commerce and Tourism (December-November 1990) .

During his tenure as minister in the Home department in 1985-86, he was allegedly involved in the Czech pistol case, where a deal with a Czechoslovakian firm Merkuria Foreign Trade Corp. had resulted in a loss of around 25 lakh . But it is not the time to discuss such issues . We should be respectful to the departed soul . A man should not be criticized , when he is not there to defend himself .

I used to read his columns and was fan of Arun Nehru , the columnist . It is sad that he is gone and gone too soon .

Month of August 2013 will always be known for ” Chennai Express ” . The film is the fastest 100 crore earner in the history of Hindi cinema and finally it crossed collections of ” 3 Idiots “ also . So officially now it is the highest grossing film in the history of Hindi cinema . It collected INR 222 crores and still running .

First week of the month got some 6 poor and forgettable films . But the second week changed all . This month also created history because of ” Love in Bombay “ . The Joy Mukherjee and Waheeda Rehman starrer film got theatrical release after 42 years of its completion .

A well-known costume designer of 60s and 70s , Mani Rabadi died this month . She was sister of yesteryear actress Shammi .

Apart from Bhanu Athaiya , she was another one , who was a professional dress designer in the early years of our film industry . Starting with ” Jewel Thief ” [ 1967 ] , she continued working till ” Hum Aapke Hain Kaun ” [ 1994 ] .

” Jewel Thief ” [ 1967 ] , ” An Evening In Paris ” [ 1967 ] , ” Bobby ” [ 1973 ] , ” Amar Akbar Anthony ” [ 1979 ] , and ” Pestonjee ” [ 1987 ] are her famous and most successful films . She also won National Film Award for Best Costume for ” Pestonjee ” .

But my journey continues unabated . These revellers of failed legacy will eat crow very soon . Dust is now settling down quickly .

Romesh Bhandari

29 March 1928 – 07 Sep 2013

Former Indian Foreign Secretary and former controversial Governor of Uttar Pradesh , Romesh Bhandari , died on September 07 , 2013 at the age of 85 . But the news came 2 days later in today’s newspapers .

He was born in Lahore , Pakistan . His father Amar Nath Bhandari was a Punjab High Court Judge , who was part of the bench which decided Gandhi Assassination case .

He served as Lieutenant Governor of Delhi and Andaman and Nicobar Islands . Later on he was appointed governor of Tripura , Goa and finally Uttar Pradesh .

He died on the night of 7th September 2013 after a prolonged illness . As I have stated earlier , news came two days after his death . And it was insignificantly consigned in the small column of the newspapers .

To secure this much coverage , he mortgaged his dignity . He became a servile flatterer and a fawning parasite . During his tenure of the governor of Uttar Pradesh , he became a shameless sycophant of his political masters and allowed , hatched and supervised all kind of machinations to topple democratically elected BJP government of Kalyan Singh . In a midnight coup , he dismissed Kalyan Singh and appointed his stooge Jagdambika Pal , as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh . Today Jagdambika Pal is a prominent member of the Congress party .

It is another story that the illegal government of Jagdambika Pal did not survive and Romesh Bhandari had egg on his arrogant face . He was audacious enough to carry on as the governor of Uttar Pradesh even after this fiasco . When BJP government was formed at the centre , he meekly submitted his resignation and ran away from Uttar Pradesh .

In my life I have watched and read about many governors of various provinces . But Romesh Bhandari was allegedly the most shameless and cunning of them all . He was an unabashed sycophant . Little wonder that his death evoked no sympathy . Even present day mandarins of Indian National Congress chose to ignore his inconsequential and controversial legacy . He did every thing to please his masters . He subverted every tenet of the constitution of India . He allowed Raj Bhawan of Uttar Pradesh to become a chamber of conspiracy . He himself became a doormat of his political masters . And yet , after his death , he got just few lines tucked in the inner pages of the national newspapers and that too , after two days .

Ignominy , thy name is Romesh Bhandari !

I am sorry that I have to write this about him after his death . It is said that you should speak only good about the dead . But Romesh Bhandari is the exception . That is the reason I have not posted my photograph in sad mood , which I always post when I write an obituary .

VIDUR Acting Institute , which is known as Vidur’s Kreating Charakters along with all the members of the staff of VIDUR Editing Studio , VIDUR Club and VIDUR Theatre would strive not to be like him in any way .

It is better to live for principles and live the life with dignity than to become a stooge and factotum for power and pelf .

This is my 3rd blog about my ” Bigg Boss “ connection .

This year’s ” Bigg Boss “ is starting fifteen days earlier than the previous seasons . ” Bigg Boss “ , a reality show , is based on the original Dutch ” Big Brother “ format developed by John de Mol . The show is hosted by Salman Khan.

I wrote 1st blog about ” Bigg Boss – Season 5 “ on October 04 , 2011 . I wrote 2nd blog about ” Bigg Boss “ on October 09 , 2012 , when ” Bigg Boss – Season – 6 “ started on Colors on October 07 , 2012 .

I had written that I feel extremely proud and humbled that from Season 1 to Season 6 , each season of ” Bigg Boss “ had 2 students of mine as participants .

For me it is time to rejoice . But for some it is time to start abusive campaign all over again . There are Acting Gurus in Mumbai and there are some Gaali Gurus in Mumbai . Acting Gurus train actors , who act in films and participate in big shows like ” Bigg Boss “ . Gaali Gurus hurl abuses and train students , who become brokers . They roam around in search of prey and hoodwink gullible students to take admission in the Facebook Acting School of these Gaali Gurus .

But without them life would be boring . The dull and dreary life of an Acting Guru becomes full of fun when Gaali Gurus are around with choicest cuss words . So waiting for fresh round of abuses from the Gaali Gurus of the Facebook Acting School .

I wanted to write this blog a week back , when Shri Narendra Modi was anointed as the Prime Ministerial candidate of Bharatiya Janata Party . But I was busy writing an article on Mahamana Madan Mohan Malaviya for a Kenyan magazine , which is published from Nairobi , capital of Kenya . Yesterday I mailed that article to Shri Ram Chandra Pandey , Pracharak of Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh , Kenya . Today , as I am relatively free , I am sitting in my study and writing this blog .

I am a fan of Dilip Kumar . My veneration for him knows no limit . In his career spanning 54 years [ when he was working and was active ] , he has done only 59 films [ including Guest appearances ] . Out of his 59 released films , I have seen 45 . I have seen many of his films several times . Ironically I have not seen his first film ” Jwaar Bhata ” [ 1944 ] and his last film ” Quila ” [ 1998 ] .

Let us have a look on his career and achievements . He was nominated 18 times for the Filmfare Awards , and won it 8 times . He was awarded Padma Bhushan in 1991 , Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1994 and was a nominated member of Rajya Sabha also for one term . In 1998 he got Nishan – E – Imtiaz from the government of Pakistan .

His towering and gigantic personality hovered over my horizon from ” Ganga Jumna ” [ 1961 ] , which I watched in 1967 , till today , when he is recuperating in the ICU of Lilavati hospital .

Thus from 1967 to 2013 , it is a 46 – year – long association full of reverence , veneration and respect . It refuses to ebb .

But Dilip Kumar’s benign and all-pervading shadow on my life was disturbed and somewhat eclipsed with the advent of Amitabh Bachchan in 1969 . From ” Saat Hindustani ” [ 1969 ] to ” Satyagraha ” [ 2013 ] , he has acted in 186 films [ including Guest appearances & Voice overs ] . And out of 186 , I have watched 120 films . ” Anand ” [ 1971 ] was the first film of Amitabh Bachchan , which I watched . Ironically I have not watched his first film ” Saat Hindustani ” [ 1969 ] and his latest ” Satyagraha ” [ 2013 ] . An uncanny coincidence of my life , which happened in the case of Dilip Kumar also .

The Amitabh Bachchan juggernaut , in real sense of the term , started with ” Zanjeer ” [ 1973 ] . One year later Dilip Kumar came with a critically acclaimed but flop ” Sagina ” [ 1974 ] .

Two years after ” Zanjeer ” [ 1973 ] , Amitabh Bachchan gave two iconic super hits , ” Deewar ” and ” Sholay ” [ 1975 ] . Again one year later Dilip Kumar came with triple role in a much – delayed and moderate hit ” Bairaag ” [ 1976 ] .

After hiatus of 5 years , Dilip Kumar started his second innings with hugely successful ” Kranti ” [ 1981 ] . But same year Amitabh Bachchan gave 3 super – hits ” Lawaaris ” , ” Yaraana ” and ” Kaalia ” [ 1981 ] and hugely likable ” Silsila ” [ 1981 ] .

They both , a year later , came together in critically acclaimed , highly likable but a box office dud ” Shakti ” [ 1982 ] .

Dilip Kumar last came in ” Quila ” [ 1998 ] and 2 years later Amitabh Bachchan started his second innings with hugely successful ” Mohabbatein ” [ 2000 ] . And the juggernaut , which started with ” Zanjeer ” [ 1973 ] still continues unabated in 2013 also .

Thus from ” Anand ” [ 1971 ] to ” Satyagraha ” [ 2013 ] , it is a 42 – year – long association of me with Amitabh Bachchan also .

Let us have a peek in the other achievements of Amitabh Bachchan . He briefly dabbled in politics and was member of the 8th Lok Sabha . He got Padma Shri in 1984 and Padma Bhushan in 2001. His achievements in the film world are no less spectacular compared to Dilip Kumar . He has got 3 National Awards and unbelievable 39 Filmfare nominations in several categories , though Dilip Kumar holds the record of winning 8 Filmfare trophies .

But I must admit with all honesty that despite his unprecedented and unbelievable accomplishments , acceptance of Amitabh Bachchan was not easy for me . Though I watched his films with much admiration and appreciation , and as stated earlier , I have watched 120 films of Amitabh Bachchan but my hero , my idol was always Dilip Kumar .

And I think being a fan and admirer of Dilip Kumar does not mean that I don’t accept Amitabh Bachchan’s persona or demean it . They both hovered on my horizon . They both influenced me immensely . I am a fan of both of them but it is also a fact that Dilip Kumar reigns supreme and stands few notches higher .

Same is the case with Shri Lal Krishna Advani . I first heard of him in 1967 when I was in High School . 1967 is the same year when I came to know about Dilip Kumar through his film , a golden jubilee hit ” Ganga Jumna ” . So in an uncanny way my association with Dilip Kumar and Advani ji started in the same year , 1967 .

Advani ji became my political hero during my school , college and university days . I came to know Dilip Kumar when Amitabh Bachchan was yet to make his debut . In the same way when I started admiring Lal Krishna Advani , Shri Narendra Modi was yet to make his debut in politics .

Shri Narendra Modi , just like Amitabh Bachchan , has spectacular achievements to his credit . Shri Narendra Modi , just like Amitabh Bachchan , is hugely popular . Shri Narendra Modi , just like Amitabh Bachchan , is continuing with his unstoppable juggernaut . Shri Narendra Modi , just like Amitabh Bachchan , is the current idol and is liked by the cadre immensely .

But as I have said earlier , in my heart Dilip Kumar still reigns supreme . And being a fan of Dilip Kumar is in no way an insult to Amitabh Bachchan . Admiring Dilip Kumar is in no way derogatory to Amitabh Bachchan . In the same way my political hero is Shri Lal Krishna Advani . And being a Lal Krishna Advani admirer is in no way an insult to Shri Narendra Modi .

It is just a question of whom you grow with . Your hero of growing years is going to be your hero till your last breath .

Shri Narendra Modi , just like Amitabh Bachchan , is the current favourite . But it doesn’t mean that Dilip Kumar and Lal Krishna Advani have no relevance or have no achievements to their credit . I like Shri Narendra Modi and Amitabh Bachchan for their achievements , but I idolize Dilip Kumar and Lal Krishna Advani for their glorious innings and immense contribution in their respective fields .

I again assert that being an admirer of Advani ji does not make me an automatic hater of Modi ji . Persons like me who have admired Advani ji all their life , can’t accept a new icon in one night . It is going to be a slow and difficult process . This was the case with Amitabh Bachchan also . But gradually Amitabh Bachchan’s all-pervading shadow inundated me completely . Slowly and eventually same will definitely happen with Modi ji also . But till then Advani ji is my political hero as Dilip Kumar is my screen idol .

I told this story to all the students and staff of VIDUR Acting Institute , which is known as Vidur’s Kreating Charakters . Today I am expressing it for the followers of my blog and general public , who visit my blog space .

They don’t have to become a broker to help me in my voyage . I don’t encourage my students to roam around in the lanes and pimp around in search of new clients to further my business .

And thank God ! I don’t have the ignominy of becoming a door-mat of my student , so that I can also revel in revelries of the film industry .

As I write this blog , I remember and would like to remind all my readers that I have been training actors since 1990 . In such a long journey , I took several different paths , passed through various difficult routes . I achieved many milestones . I faced some disappointments . I missed few points here & there . But overall it was a satisfying journey indeed .

I am happy that as an acting trainer or acting tutor I had one more very satisfying year . My success rate in 2012 – 2013 is 40% and believe me , this is unprecedented . No acting institute can claim to have such a track record .

When I say and talk about acting institutes , I don’t include Shri Roshan Taneja . As I have stated in my earlier blog , he is beyond any list . A man , who is training actors since 50 long years , is definitely an uncrowned king in this field .

I don’t include Madam Ashha Chandra also . She is my teacher and I have no audacity to compare myself with her . At least my upbringing , my SANSKAR does not permit me to do that .

But yes , when I talk about acting institutes , I do include all the other ones . Veterans and upstarts have become desperate after the advent of Vidur Acting Institute . A veteran has put up road signs with arrow mark at every nook and corner signalling and indicating his address . His inglorious and shameless disciples are making tall claims and revelling in false glory . They are audacious enough to make preposterous claims . They claim to have trained almost everyone , who are there in my student list . But despite all their deceitful and mischievous efforts , they are slipping . They are failing miserably . The beginning of the end has started for the GAALI GURUS of Facebook Acting School .

As per the famous quote of Abraham Lincoln – ” You can fool some of the people all of the time , and all of the people some of the time , but you can not fool all of the people all of the time . “

On the occasion of the anniversary of VIDUR Acting Institute , which is known as Vidur’s Kreating Charakters , I thank all the eminent people of the film industry , who helped me in my long and arduous journey .

Companies have tradition of publishing Annual Progress Reports for their share – holders . Acting Institutes have no such tradition . Not even one acting institute of the world has done it ever .

Acting Institutes have only brochures . But brochures are published in bulk and very often they carry old information . Therefore I decided to establish VIDUR Club and publish Newsletter [ Internet Version ] / Booklet of Achievements [ Print Version ] of the previous year for the perusal of our past , present and would be students , friends & well-wishers , who reside in the 158 countries of the world .

When some upstart acting trainers revel in deception , it is prudent to become upright in dealings . When some upstart acting trainers revel in dishing out false data , it is advisable to come out with true facts & figures . When some upstart acting trainers revel in preposterous claims to lure and hoodwink gullible students , it is ethical and natural to remain transparent .

Armaan Jain , grandson of immortal Raj Kapoor and cousin of Kareena Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor , is making debut in the Untitled film of Illuminati Films . It is being produced by Saif Ali Khan and directed by Arif Ali , younger brother of Imtiaz Ali . A. R. Rehman is giving music in this untitled film . Incidentally all the 4 artistes mentioned above ; Kareena Kapoor , Ranbir Kapoor , Armaan Jain and producer Saif Ali Khan , are my students .

Prabodh Chandra Dey a.k.a. Manna Dey

The news of Manna Dey’s death was almost a certainty and was expected . Advancing age and failing health had prepared us for such an eventuality . Still when I read about his demise , a pall of gloom engulfed me . He died on October 24 , 2013 in Bengaluru at the age of 94 .

Manna Dey , along with Mohammad Rafi , Mukesh , Kishore Kumar , Talat Mehmood and Hemant Kumar , was the most important play back singer of the golden era of Hindi films and a force to reckon with in singing world . With his demise , the last remnant of the golden era of Hindi film music and a gigantic figure among the male play back singers of Hindi film world is gone forever .

Before proceeding further , I must admit my blasphemy that initially I used to dislike his singing . Today as I can understand the nuances of music , I am ashamed of my blasphemy and I am extremely sorry that during my adolescent years , I was unable to appreciate his mastery of the art and craft . The first song of Manna Dey , which I liked and appreciated was the iconic ” Qasme Waade Pyaar Wafa , Sab Baaten Hain Baaton Kaa Kyaa ………………………………………. ” , the song from Manoj Kumar’s ” Upkar ” [ 1967 ] . I was speechless and stunned while listening the song and watching Pran Saheb on screen . It is uncanny that Pran Saheb and his screen voice in many films , Manna Da , both died in 2013 . Pran Saheb left us on July 12 , 2013 and just 3 months 12 days later , his voice on-screen , Manna Da also left us on October 24 , 2013 .

Later on when I started watching old Hindi films in Allahabad in Sunday morning shows , I watched ” Shri 420 ” [ 1955 ] , I was hooked to his voice . ” Pyaar Hua Iqraar Hua , Phir Pyaar Se Ab Kyon Darta Hai Dil …………………………… ” , ” Dil Ka Haal Sune Dilwaalaa …………………………… ” , ” Mud Mud Ke Na Dekh ………………………. ” and the evergreen ” Ramaiya Vastavaiya ……………… “ are difficult to forget .

After watching ” Chori Chori ” [ 1956 ] , I was mesmerized by his voice . His duets with Lata Mangeshkar are immortal and they are pure gems . ” Aajaa Sanam , Madhur Chandni Men Ham ……………………………….. ” and ” Ye Raat Bheegi Bheegi , Ye Mast Fizayen …………………………………… “ refuse to fade away from my memory even after 57 years .

Who can forget his other immortal melodies like ; ” Ae Mere Pyare Watan …………… ” , ” Ik Chatur Naar Karke Singar ………………………………. ” , ” Poochho Na Kaise Maine Rain Bitayee ………………………………………. ” , ” Aao Twist Karen ………………………………………………. ” , ” Yaari Hai Eemaan Meraa …………………………………….. ” and ” Ye Dosti Ham Nahin Chhodenge ……………………………………. ” ?

Known by his stage name Manna Dey , he debuted in the film ” Tamanna ” [ 1942 ] , and continued to sing till ” Umar ” [ 2006 ] . He went on to record more than 4000 songs during 1942 – 2013 . He , though sang for other heroes occasionally , was the voice of Raj Kapoor , Uttam Kumar , Mehmood and Pran .

Since 1992, Manna Dey withdrew himself from Hindi film music. But he continued to sing in Bengali movies, bhajans and ghazals in different languages and appeared in live performances during 1992 to 2012 . His last live performance was in 2012 in Mumbai. His last recorded song in Hindi films was for the film Umar in 2006 composed by Shamir Tandon, Duniyawaalo Kee Nahee Kuchh Bhee Khabar, which he sang along with Kavita Krishnamoorthy and Sonu Nigam.

He sang duets with singers like Mukesh, Sandhya Mukherjee, Mahendra Kapoor, Talat Mahmood, Amit Kumar, Shailendra Singh, Krishna Kalle, Shardha Rajan Iyengar, Arati Mukherjee, Chandrani Mukherjee, Anuradha Pudwal, Hemlata, Minu Purushottom, Bhupinder Singh, K.J. Yesudas, Suresh Wadkar, Kavita Krishnamoorty, Alka Yagnik, Antara Chowdhury, Preeti Sagar, Dilraj Kaur, Yunus Fazmi, Jaspal Singh, Anwar, Manhar Udhas, Joginder and Mubarak Begum.

He worked with more than 102 music directors in Hindi film industry from working with Krishna Chandra Dey in ” Tamanna ” [ 1942 ] to music composer Shamir Tandon in ” Umar ” [ 2006 ] . Thus it was an unprecedented 64 years – long – singing – career .

The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri in 1971, the Padma Bhushan in 2005 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2007 . He was presented the Filmfare Life Time Achievement Award in 2011.

Manna Da sang mainly in Hindi and Bengali; he also recorded songs in several other Indian languages .

He sang around 1262 songs in Bengali : 611 songs in Bengali films and 356 Bengali non-film songs . He also sang 46 Rabindra Sangeet Songs in Bengali , 3 Dwigendra Geet , 84 Shyama Sangeet , 23 songs in Akashvani , 3 title songs for Bengali TV serials , 103 Bengali songs from non-released Bengali films and 33 Bengali songs of other varieties .
He sang 35 film songs in Bhojpuri , 2 songs in Magadh and one song in Maithili language .
He sang 13 Punjabi film songs and 5 non-film songs .
He sang 2 songs in Assamese films and 4 non-film songs in Assamese language .

He sang 7 songs in Oriya language and 1 song each in Konkani film and Sindhi film .
He sang 85 songs in Gujrathi films.
He sang 55 Marathi songs in Marathi films and 15 non-film songs in Marathi .He was good at Marathi natya sangeet too, which is one of the most difficult genres to sing
He sang 5 film songs in Kannada .
He sang in the Nepali movie ” Maitighar “
He sang 2 in Malayalam – “Maanasamaine Varoo” from 1965 film Chemmeen and song “Chemba Chemba” from 1974 film Nellu sung with P Jayachandran both composed by Salil Chowdhary and lyrics by Vayalar.

On behalf of all the students and staff of VIDUR Acting Institute , which is known as Vidur’s Kreating Charakters , I offer my condolences to his family . My heart goes to his daughters and other near and dear ones .

VIDUR Editing Studio , VIDUR Club and VIDUR Theatre would also like to offer tribute . It is clichéd to say but there will never be another Manna Dey . He bestrode the Hindi film music world like a colossus but unfortunately never got his due .

May his soul rest in peace !

Month of October 2013 will always be infamously known and remembered for ” Besharam “ , a Ranbir Kapoor film , which is the biggest ever Hindi film release till date with over 3000 prints . It is also Ranbir Kapoor’s biggest flop till date . It is said to be the desi version of ” Lock , Stock And Two Smoking Barrels ” .

” Boss “ , a Akshay Kumar film , also bombed at the box office . Towards the end of the month , 05 films got released but they all failed to make mark in any way .

It is sad and unfortunate that 5 luminaries of Hindi film world left us for their heavenly abode this month . It made this month more gloomy and melancholic .

Popular filmmaker of the 70s and 80s, and son-in-law of legendary B. R. Chopra , Raj Tilak passed away on October 06 , 2013 after suffering from septicaemia . He was 73 years old at the time of his death .

He made some highly popular films like ; ” 36 Ghante ” [ 1974 ] , ” Mukti ” [ 1977 ] , ” Tumhare Liye ” [ 1978 ] and ” Chehre Pe Chehra ” [ 1981 ] .

His film ” 36 Ghante ” [ 1974 ] was based on William Wyler’s cult Hollywood film ” The Desperate Hours ” [ 1955 ] . And ” Chehre Pe Chehra ” [ 1981 ] was an Indian version of the famous novella of Robert Louis Stevenson ” Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde “ .

Raj has directed bigwigs like Shashi Kapoor, Sanjeev Kumar, Rekha and Parveen Babi. He has been an active member of the Producers Guild too.

Krishna Shah :

India’s first true export to Hollywood and a producer – director of repute , Krishna Shah died on October 13 , 2013 in Los Angeles , U.S.A. at the age of 75 .

He produced and directed many successful films in Hollywood . His first Indian film was Dharmendra & Zeenat Aman starrer ” Shalimar ” [ 1978 ] . Incidentally it was also the debut film of Rex Harrison in Hindi . He later made a documentary on Indian cinema . It is called ” Cinema Cinema ” [ 1979 ] .

Younger brother of Dara Singh and a wrestler of repute , Randhawa died on 21 October 2013 in Mumbai .

He worked in many films along with his brother and also had few solo starrers . His better known films are ” Faulad ” [ 1963 ] , ” Aadmi Aur Insaan ” [ 1969 ] , ” Henna ” [ 1991 ] and ” Duplicate ” [ 1998 ] .

He married Mallika , younger sister of Mumtaz and his son Shaad Randhawa made his debut in Mahesh Bhat’s ” Woh Lamhe ” [ 2006 ] .

After the sad demise of Mohammad Rafi , Mukesh , Kishore Kumar , Hemant Kumar and Talat Mehmood , the last of the titans in the field of Hindi playback singing , Manna Dey died on October 24 , 2013 in Bengaluru at the age of 94 .

Noted Hindi writer and a satirist of repute , K. P. Saxena died on October 31 , 2013 in Lucknow , Uttar Pradesh due to cardiac arrest . He was 81 at the time of his death .

A Padma Shri awardee , he wrote dialogues for couple of Hindi films . Notable among them are ; ” Lagaan ” [ 2001 ] , ” Swades ” [ 2004 ] , ” Hulchul ” [ 2004 ] and ” Jodha Akbar ” [ 2008 ] . He was also nominated for Filmfare Award for Best Dialogue Writer for ” Jodha Akbar ” [ 2008 ] .
