MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           APRIL 16 , 2013           00.10 A.M.

I was happy to read the news that Pran Saheb was awarded Dada Saheb Phalke Award 2012 . As a veteran actor , who has worked in more than 400 films , he deserved much better . He should have got the award long back . But Pran Saheb , the gentleman villain of Hindi film industry got it very late . If you count his active years in films , he stands second in the hierarchy . Dev Anand [ Hum Ek Hain - 1946 to Chargesheet - 2011 === 113 films === 65 active years ] . Pran [ Yamla Jat - 1940 to Kiska Dosh - 2003 === 400 films === 63 active years ] . Legendary Ashok Kumar comes third . From [ Jeevan Naiya - 1936 to Aankhon Me Tum Ho - 1997 === 301 films === 61 active years ] . These three are the only Indian actors who can boast of such long and illustrious innings in Hindi films . In seniority he is second and second only to Ashok Kumar . Dilip Kumar , Dev Anand and Raj Kapoor came much later .

I have seen his films and in his films invariably Pran Saheb’s name used to come at the end . He used to be billed as ……………. and Pran . It is uncanny that this happened to him this time also .

If my memory is not failing me , the first movie of Pran Saheb , which I watched was ” Khandan ” [ 1965 ] . It was in Vijay Talkies , Deoria and perhaps the year was 1966 . Same year I watched ” Dil Diya Dard Liya “ and my admiration for Pran Saheb , in the garb of hate , began . Next year I watched ” Ram Aur Shyam ” [ 1967 ] in Pushparaj Talkies , Allahabad and it fortified my admiration for him and since then I am a die-hard fan of this legendary actor .

I may not be running most famous acting school of Mumbai , or most famous acting institute of India or most famous acting class of bollywood or most famous acting academy of world but I think it is my duty to offer my greetings to the legend .

I congratulate Pran Saheb on behalf of all the students and staff of Vidur Acting Institute , which is known as  Vidur’s Kreating Charakters . May God give long and healthy life to the legend called Pran Krishna Sikand , a.k.a. Pran.

Dada Saheb Phalke Award was instituted in 1969 . Till date 43 luminaries have got this prestigious award . Pran Saheb is 44th .

Devika Rani got it in 1969

P. B. Sreenivas : The Golden Voice Is No More

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           APRIL 18, 2013           00.50 A.M.

Legendary playback singer P. B. Sreenivas a.k.a. PBS died on April 14, 2013 in Chennai at the age of 82 .

P. B. Sreenivas

P. B. Sreenivas

He made his début in 1952 in Gemini’s Hindi film “ Mr Sampat ”, where his song “Aji hum Bharat ki naari”, a duet with Geeta Dutt, became popular. I still remember ” Mr. Sampat “ because of the sterling performance of Late Moti Lal , who played the lead in the film . He played a con man and played it with such aplomb , that his sherwani clad persona with swagger in his walk is still etched in my memory and his histrionics is still fresh . Though I had forgotten the above mentioned song .

Mr. Sampat

PBS sang his most popular duet in Hindi “ Chanda Se Hoga Wo Pyaara , Phoolon Se Hoga Wo Nyara ; Naachega Aangan Men Chham Chham , Nanha Sa Munna Hamara ” with Lata Mangeshkar in the film Main Bhi Ladki Hoon in 1964 . Music director of this song was Chitragupta and lyrics were written by Rajendra Krishan . It is sad that till recently I was under impression that the male voice in this song is of Hemant Kumar . It is only after the death of PBS that I got to know through the newspaper articles that the male singer in this song is P. B. Sreenivas and not Hemant Kumar .

Main Bhi Ladki Hoon

This film was made by A.V.M. studio Chennai and it had Meena Kumari and Dharmendra in stellar role . Balraj Sahni , Om Prakash , Manorama and Bhagwan Dada also starred in the film . Meena Kumari’s enchanting persona and this melodious song is still remembered by the connoisseurs of Hindi cinema . ” Main Bhi Ladki Hoon “ is unforgettable even today .

Though PBS had hit numbers in all the languages that he sang, it was in the Kannada Film Industry that he sang the highest number of songs and delivered the highest number of hits. P. B. Sreenivas ruled the Kannada Industry for over three decades and was the voice for Super Star Dr. Rajkumar . His first song for Rajkumar was in 1956 film ” Ohileshwara “ . He , later on , sang almost 300 hit songs for the Kannada Super Star .

In the Tamil industry, his maximum number of songs are for Gemini Ganesan. The most memorable hit of this duo was ‘Nilave ennidam nerungathe’.

Almost all his Kannada songs became famous and though he sang in many languages , he is considered a Kannadiga playback singer .

Most famous acting school of Mumbai , or most famous acting institute of India , or most famous acting academy of bollywood will not recognise him . They are oblivious of his contribution . God bless them !

P. B. Sreenivas

On behalf of all the students and staff of  VIDUR Acting Institute , which is known as  Vidur’s Kreating Charakters  , I offer my heartfelt condolences .

May eternal peace be bestowed on him !

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           APRIL 18 , 2013           10.45 P.M.

Alas !!

This is my 6th obituary in April and the month is yet to get over . I am extremely sad that in April so many luminaries from various walks of life left us for their final journey . First Hugo Chavez , then B. M. Vyas , then Ruth Prawer Jhabvala , then Roger Ebert , then P. B. Sreenivas and now Margaret Thatcher , The Iron Lady , the first and only woman Prime Minister of Great Britain also left us . Margaret Thatcher was not only the first woman Prime Minister of Britain but she was one of the longest-serving Prime Minister of the country .

Margaret Hilda Thatcher

Baroness Thatcher

13 October 1925 – 8 April 2013

Margaret Thatcher was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990 and the Leader of the Conservative Party from 1975 to 1990.

A Soviet journalist called her the “Iron Lady“, a nickname that became associated with her uncompromising politics and leadership style. As Prime Minister, she implemented policies that have come to be known as Thatcherism.

Edward Heath appointed her Secretary of State for Education and Science in his 1970 government. In 1975, Thatcher defeated Heath in the Conservative Party leadership election to become Leader of the Opposition and became the first woman to lead a major political party in the United Kingdom. She became Prime Minister after winning the 1979 general election.

While in the office , Thatcher introduced a series of political and economic initiatives intended to reverse high unemployment and Britain’s struggles in the wake of the Winter of Discontent and an ongoing recession . Her political philosophy and economic policies emphasised deregulation , flexible labour markets, the privatisation of state-owned companies, and reducing the power and influence of trade unions.

The 1982 Falklands War brought a resurgence of support for her , resulting in her re-election in 1983.

Thatcher was re-elected for a third term in 1987. During this period her support for a Community Charge (popularly referred to as “poll tax”) was widely unpopular and her views on the European Community were not shared by others in her Cabinet. She resigned as Prime Minister and party leader in November 1990, after Michael Heseltine launched a challenge to her leadership.

After retiring from the Commons in 1992, she was given a life peerage as Baroness Thatcher, of Kesteven in the County of Lincolnshire, which entitled her to sit in the House of Lords.

She effectively retired from politics due to ill-health in 2002 following a stroke, and on 8 April 2013, she died of another stroke in London at the age of 87.

These days world is ravaged by the numerous small and big battles being fought in the various countries of the world . But in those comparatively peaceful days , the 1982 Falklands War is the only war , apart from Indo-China War in 1962 and Indo-Pakistan Wars in 1965 & 1971 , which I vividly remember . I started admiring Margaret Thatcher after the Falklands War .

I am not a war-monger , but I liked the way Margaret Thatcher handled the Falklands crisis . My admiration for her became stronger when I read about her bold decisions , which she took for the betterment of her country . It is not for nothing that she is admired by so many people all over the world .

It is disgusting that a microscopic minority is celebrating her death . At least they should learn to respect an old lady , who served her country to the best of her ability and served with true grit and unflinching determination .

Two images which I have posted above are in bad taste . This is not the way to treat a lady , an old lady , a dead lady . But figure bears true testimony . There were more than 4000 well-wishers clapping all along the way and there were only 200 ill-wishers showing their back and shrieking , ” witch …… witch ……… witch . I condemn these uncouth protesters .

On behalf of all the students and staff of VIDUR Acting Institute , which is known as  Vidur’s Kreating Charakters  , I offer my heartfelt condolences to the near and dear ones of Baroness Thatcher .

My acting institute is not the most famous acting school of Mumbai , or the most famous acting institute of India and or the most famous acting academy of bollywood , but I consider it my duty to offer my condolences and express my respect for the one of the greatest British leaders of our time .

Shamshad Begum

April 14, 1919 – April 23, 2013

Shamshad Begum was one of the first playback singers in the Hindi film industry. She had sung over 6000 songs in Hindi , Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati, Tamil and Punjabi languages. Her songs from the 1940s to the early 1970s remain popular and continue to be remixed.

Young Shamshad Begum

Young Shamshad Begum

Shamshad Begum died this month on April 23 , 2013 at the age of 94 and I am forced to write 7th obituary in continuation in the month of April . Shamshad Begum , along with Noor Jahan and Amirbai Karnataki , dominated the pre-Lata Mangeshkar era in Indian playback singing .

Among female playback singers , She was blessed with a distinct voice with slight nasal twang and any lover of Hindi film music can immediately recognize her voice .

Since I was born and brought up in the Lata Mangeshkar era , I was not a fan of Shamshad Begum’s voice initially. But slowly , as my understanding grew , I started appreciating her voice .

The first song of hers , which caught my fancy , was ” Pee Ke Ghar Aaj Pyari Dulhaniya Chali ” . ThisMother India ” [ 1957 ] song was immensely popular . Other songs of the same film ; ” Holi Ayee Re Kanhayi Rang Chhalke Suna De Zara Bansuri ” and ” Gadiwale Gadi Dheere Haank Re “ are also hit even today . Then I watched Mughal – E – Azam ” [ 1960] and its immortal qawwali is still fresh in my mind . ” Teri Mehfil Me Qismat Azma Ke Hum Bhi Dekhenge “ is a connoisseur’s delight . Then I watched ” Aan ” [ 1952 ] and I was permanently hooked to Shamshad Begum’s voice . All her popular songs , like ; ” Aag Lagi Tan Man Me Dil Ko Pada Thamna , Ram Jaane Kab Hoga Saiyyan Ji Ka Samna ” and ” Khelo Rang Hamare Sang Aaj Din Rang Rangeela Aaya “ are still my favourites . But ” C. I. D. ” [ 1956 ] was another revelation . ” Le Ke Pehla Pehla Pyaar , Bhar Ke Aankhon Me Khumar ” and ” Kahin Pe Nigahen Kahin Pe Nishana , Jeene Do Zalim Banao Na Deewana “ are just immortal . It is surprising that I heard her most popular song very late in my life . ” Mere Piya Gaye Rangoon Kiya Hai Wahan Se Telefoon , Tumhari Yaad Satati Hai “ . This song from ” Patanga ” [ 1949 ] is unforgettable and its several re-mixed versions are still extremely popular . ” Naya Daur ” [ 1957 ] film’s ” Reshmi Salwar Kurta Jaali Ka “ was a craze of its time . Her last hit  ” Kajra Mohabbatwala Ankhiyon Me Aisa Dala “  from ” Kismat ” [ 1969 ] is one of the songs which was re-mixed again & again .

4

Shamshad Begum’s career was somewhat eclipsed with the advent of Lata Mangeshkar . She sang her first duet ” Dar Na Mohabbat Kar Le “ with Lata Mangeshkar in ” Andaz ” [ 1949 ] and her last duet with Lata Mangeshkar was ” Teri Mehfil Me Qismat Azma Kar Hum Bhi Dekhenge “ from ” Mughal – E – Azam ” [ 1960 ] . Within these 13 years Shamshad Begum’s career went downhill and after giving her last hit ” Kajra Mohabbatwala “ in 1969 , she bid adieu to playback singing .

  • Milte Hai Ankhen Dil Deewana Hua Kisika – Babul – with Talat Mahmood
  • Kisike Dil Mein Rehna Tha – Babul – with Lata
  • Dharti Ko Aakash Pukare – Mela – with Mukesh
  • do teen aaja mausam hai rangeen – Awara

Shamshad Begum’s fans often allege that her career suffered because of the monopolistic politics of Lata Mangeshkar . I beg to differ . Shamshad Begum played her innings and retired gracefully . Her career suffered because of the changing times and changing taste of film-goers . Talat Memood’s career went downhill with the advent of Mohammad Rafi . Even mighty Mohammed Rafi , towards the end of his career , was confined in his home for many years without recording a single song and Kishore Kumar ruled that era . In the field of art such things happen .

Her distinct style , her nasal twang and her strong voice , which was her forte in the earlier years of her career , became her nemesis towards the end . It is not for nothing that towards the fag-end of her career , her voice was used for vamps and her last hit ” Kajra Mohabbatwala “ in ” Kismat ” [ 1969 ] was filmed on Vishwajeet , who was masquerading as woman in the said film .

On behalf of all the students and staff of VIDUR Acting Institute , which is known as  Vidur’s Kreating Charakters  , I offer my condolences to the family of the iconic singer . Self-proclaimed most famous acting school of Mumbai , self-anointed most famous acting institute of India and self-appointed most famous acting academy of bollywood has no time for such courtesy .

Shamshad Begum

Shamshad Begum

May her soul rest in peace ! Her ephemeral body is gone but her perennial voice , the temple bell , will live on forever .

        2. #IronMan3 is on a record-smashing spree. Numbers being compiled, but it’s a stupendous start. Biggest Hollywood opener? Let’s wait!

        3. #Aashiqui2 has had a fantastic start. Though numbers still being compiled, it’s one of the biggest starts for a film starring newcomers!

Hail Ida Pollock ! 105 Years Old Eternal Romantic

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           MAY 04 , 2013           08.45 P.M.

I must admit that I have never heard the name Ida Pollock / Ida Pallock . When Ida Pollock turned 105 last month and when several newspapers carried articles about her , then I started searching about her . I was startled to know that she has written 70 Mills & Boon novels . I never knew it because for Mills & Boon series she used pseudonyms . She wrote them under the names Susan Barrie, Pamela Kent, Rose Burghley or Mary Whistler.

I was amazed to know that she is such prolific that in her 105 years of life , she has written 123 novels . And at 105 , she is about to publish her 124th novel . I would love to be like her but alas , I am unable to match her accomplishments . Self-proclaimed most famous acting school of Mumbai , self-anointed most famous acting institute of India and self-appointed most famous acting academy of bollywood have no time for such literary giants and their pursuits .

Ida Pollock / Pallock / Crowe (born 12 April 1908) , is a British writer of several short-stories and 123 romance novels under her married name, Ida Pollock, and under her numerous pseudonyms: Susan Barrie, Pamela Kent, Averil Ives, Anita Charles, Barbara Rowan, Jane Beaufort, Rose Burghley, Mary Whistler and Marguerite Bell.

Prolific: Ida still writing at the age of 105

Ida Pollock has written 123 novels and has sold millions of books over nine decades with titles such as White Heat and Interlude for Love.

She has millions of fans but has largely avoided the limelight by writing under a whopping TEN pseudonyms. Her daughter Rosemary said , “ Pen names are very common in romance writing . Mum’s publishers always insisted on them because readers associated different styles with different names. “

Despite turning 105 last week Ida is still writing, and her latest 124th novel , The Runaway is due to be published shortly.

She no longer sits at her typewriter but dictates to daughter Rosemary, 69, at their remote country home in Lanreath near Looe, Cornwall.

Born in Lewisham, South London, Ida began writing thrillers in her teens and finished her first, The Hills of Raven’s Haunt, at 14.

After becoming a full-time writer in the 1930s, Ida turned to romance and penned a string of hits under the first of her ten pseudonyms, Joan Allen.

At her most prolific Ida produced 40 books in five years — all based around the timeless formula of naive young heroines saved from danger by rugged, older men.

In 1956 alone Ida had eight romances published under five pen names — each around 70,000 words long and all finishing with a happy ending.

Ida has only released a handful of books under her own name and still publishes under the last of her alter-egos, Marguerite Bell.

A Distant Drum, her most recent novel, came out in 2005. Ida’s memoirs, Starlight, were published in 2009.

Famous Ida quotes :

“A romance is never just a romance, there’s adventure, mystery and movement. “

“ You need a grand, dramatic setting — the Swiss Alps were always a personal favourite of mine — and a chance meeting, on a train, a cruise, or perhaps the hero and heroine find themselves shipwrecked on a desert island. “

“The men are normally rich, well-to-do — but never vulgar with their money. Young men lack the maturity to take control so an older man is essential to provide the reassurance the heroine needs. “

“There’s always a fair amount of turbulence before he sweeps in to save the day. A happy ending is an absolute must.”

“I think I was born to write. My mother would put a typewriter on the dining room table and say ‘there you go’. “

“My first story was published in the Christian Herald and they would pay me five guineas. I wrote my first novel when I was just 14. “

“I was into mysteries and thrillers at the time but I eventually I drifted into romance because my mother would always ask me to write ‘something pretty’.

“I’ve never got bored with it because it’s something I absolutely love. My books are full of hope and romance rather than sex.

“They are a form of escapism — you can escape the parts of the world that you don’t like.”

” It takes me about six weeks to write a novel. “

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           MAY 05 , 2013           07.00 P.M.

As an acting trainer [ some upstarts call me acting tutor - as if it is derogatory . They also mis-spelt tutor ] I run an acting institute in Mumbai . It is VIDUR Acting Institute known as Vidur’s Kreating Charakters . And to communicate with my acting students , friends & well-wishers around the world , I regularly write blogs , tweet quite frequently and update my activities on facebook account and facebook like page . I am also active on various other social net-working sites . But blog is my most potent tool , most favourite medium of expression .

Almost all the other acting trainers of India have their facebook pages . One gentleman has twitter account also . But no one is an active blogger . Recently some upstarts have started writing blogs .

Since writing blogs is not my sole prerogative , so any one can write blogs after creating  blog-space . But for that you have to know the language . You should know at least basics of the grammar . You should take care that your spelling is correct . But these upstarts are masters of bad English and wrong spelling . They have dearth of matter so abusing me is the only topic they know . They claim to be veterans but the fact of the matter is that they were my students once upon a time .

In one of their recent blog they used the adjective ” LEGENDARY ” for a B-Grade actor . The said actor , in one of his film , played second fiddle to an animal . As for his acting calibre , a video on YouTube can be watched . The so-called ” legendary ” [ ? ] actor was supposed to mouth few lines . He failed repeatedly and instead of being ashamed , he was laughing uproariously and was openly dishing out choicest cuss words and expletives .

So why this generosity to honour such a person with the word ” LEGENDARY ” . It is a syndrome . I call this Pakistan syndrome . Pakistan is just 66-year-old state . So she desperately needs national heroes . Since they don’t have any so they started importing names from Afghanistan . They invoke names of Ghazni and Ghori . Though Mehmood of Ghazni and Mohammad Ghori were the warlords of Afghanistan and they both invaded India to loot and plunder . But Pakistan appropriated them because she was in search of national icons . In the same manner these upstarts need icons for themselves . And they don’t have any . So in desperation they are calling this B-Grade hero ” LEGENDARY ” so that they can feel satisfied that they also have some one in their kitty .

In the process they are insulting the true legends . Only age or seniority cannot be the deciding factor in determining the legends . Ashok Kumar is a legend but Rashid Khan is not . Dilip Kumar is a legend but his contemporary Rajan Haksar is not . Amitabh Bachchan is a legend but Krishna Dhawan is not . Madhubala is a legend but Fariyal is not . Helen is a legend but Lakshmi Chhaya is not .

It is one thing to proclaim his / her acting institute as the most famous acting school of Mumbai , or the most famous acting institute of India , or the most famous acting academy of bollywood , but it is totally different to become the real one . One can blow one’s own rickety and rotten trumpet and proclaim to run the most famous acting school of the world . But this cacophony will not succeed . Time has come and dust is settling down . Soon , very soon , everything will be clear . Till then , abuse me profusely you uncouth morons . It shows your class and upbringing .

I thank God that for becoming famous or for self-glorification  VIDUR Acting Institute , which is known as Vidur’s Kreating Charakters   is not resorting to such tactics .

God is kind . God is great .

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           MAY 07 , 2013           08.30 P.M.

China’s India war of 1962 is still fresh in my memory land . Humiliation of my country is yet to get obfuscated in my sub-conscious mind . Deep scars of Chinese slap is yet to get healed in my psyche . Memory of insulting invasion of our motherland refuses to go away from my being . And again almost after 50 years same hegemonic China enacted second part of the same act in 2013 .

India & China – Areas of Conflict

China , on April 15 , 2013 , intruded 19 km. into Ladakh . She is showing her ugly , belligerent and bellicose face once again . Once again Ladakh is facing the brunt of Chinese hegemony . Chinese are as brazen as ever . And the ruling party of our country , the Indian National Congress , is as pliant , as subservient , as ever . Like its tallest leader Jawahar Lal Nehru , present – day leaders of Congress are again ready for genuflection . Sovereignty of India is being compromised unabashedly .

Daulat Beg Oldie and Chumar are the latest flash points . Chinese soldiers  entered into our territory , erected tents and refused to return to their earlier position . And it is not a minor incursion . Their intrusion is 19 km deep into our Ladakh .

Minister for External Affairs , Shri Salman Khurshid , is ambivalent as usual . Government of India and our Prime Minister Shri Manmohan Singh is stoic as usual . Something is being cooking up behind our back . All of a sudden news came that Chinese withdrew from Ladakh and the face off ended . Government Of India spokesperson is saying that Chinese withdrawal from our territory is unconditional . That they voluntarily returned to the pre April 15 position . But it seems that Congress , the Indian National Congress , is playing a dirty and dangerous game .

The buzz is that our government agreed to dismantle the infrastructure in Daulat Beg Oldie sector of Ladakh . They have compromised Chumar post . This particular post overlooks Karakoram Pass . The Karakoram Pass and the Karakoram highway is the lifeline of Pakistan for Pakistan Occupied Kashmir [ POK ] . Indian army can keep vigil on troop movement and clandestine arm supply and on any Sino-Pak nefarious designs . That is the reason for the latest face off .

It is widely believed that to force India to dismantle the bunkers and Chumar watch tower , China sent her soldiers to squat on Indian soil . She showed audacious belligerence and timid Congress succumbed to the pressure and agreed to compromise Chumar post .

China withdrew from Indian soil on May 06 , 2013 . But saddest part is that India also withdrew from Indian soil . If needed , China can come again . It is not the question of China’s intrusion or withdrawal . It is question of India’s genuflection . It is question of our leaders betrayal . Since the days of HINDI CHINI BHAI BHAI  , to the day of present day economic cooperation , nothing has changed in the belligerent attitude of China or the subservient attitude of our leaders of Congress .

China has a problem with all her neighbours . Be it India in the south , be it Indo – China in south – east , be it Taiwan in the east , be it Japan in north – east or be it Mongolia in the north . China’s thirst for land and more land is unquenchable .

Jawahar Lal Nehru betrayed India in 1962 . His descendents are doing the same now . According to Nehru ,  Aksai Chin was the barren area . He infamously said , ” not a blade of grass grows there .” After 50 years his party’s foreign minister says about the Chinese tents , ” it is like acne .” Nehru’s party’s incumbent prime minister says , it is a local problem . “

We have to be careful . We have to be vigilant . Congress has history of not protecting our motherland . They are compulsive liars . They can go to any length for protecting their throne , but not the country .

According to me we should engage Japan , Mongolia , Taiwan , Vietnam and Philippines in this war against China’s hegemony and her territorial invasions .

I , on behalf of all the students and staff of VIDUR Acting Institute , which is known as Vidur’s Kreating Charakters   denounce China , her bellicose and belligerent leaders and also the spineless leaders of Congress .

Once upon a time there was a sardar known as Maharaja Ranjit Singh , who conquered Ladakh .

Alas ! Now there is a sardar known as prime minister Manmohan Singh , who compromised Ladakh .

Dulari In Her Twilight Years

Dulari In Her Twilight Years

On Monday morning I was shocked to read the news of death of Dulari , a veteran yesteryear Hindi film actor . It is so heart-wrenching that she died in January 2013 and the news came in May 2013 , in Monday’s Times of India . If a popular actor dies and the news comes out a full four months later , it shows the callousness of our film industry . How come no one tried to contact her ? How come no one ever called her to say hi ? How come no one inquired about her health and well-being ? I must admit , our film industry is full of cussed , cruel and selfish people .
Today as I am writing this blog , I suddenly remember these lines , which was filmed on her in ” Devdas ” , a Bimal Roy classic .
साजन की हो गयी गोरी ………
अब घर  का आँगन बिदेस लागे  रे  , नैहर का जीवन कलेस लागे  रे …..

साजन की हो गयी गोरी ………

She left this ephemeral , painful world for her eternal journey . She joined her lover , the God , and became one with him .

A Young Dulari

A Young Dulari

Hindi cinema had many famous and powerful mother figures . Durga Khote , Lalita Pawar , Leela Chitnis , Kamini Kaushal , Achala Sachdev and Sulochna are some of the most famous mothers of Hindi cinema . In recent history Nirupa Roy became an ultimate mother figure . Dulari, though not as famous as her other illustrious peers , was also a popular mother figure of Hindi films .

Dulari - The Poorman's Mother

Dulari – The Poorman’s Mother

She started as a heroine in a couple of films . Immortal hits like  ” Aana Meri Jaan Meri Jaan , Sunday Ke Sunday “  and ” Jawaani Ki Rail Chali Jaaye Re “ , both from ” Shehnai ” [ 1947 ] were filmed on her .

Dulari

I first noticed her in Bimal Roy’s ” Devdas “ [ 1955 ] . Two songs , written by Sahir Ludhianvi and tuned by Sachin Dev Burman , were filmed on her . ” Aan Milo Aan Milo Shyam Sanware ” and ” Sajan Ki Ho Gayi Gori “ are connoisseurs delight even today .  She played a Vaishnavi Saint with Nana Palsikar as her screen companion . A young Paro , played by Baby Naaz , was sitting on a branch of a mango tree and was remembering Devdas , while Nana Palsikar sang the song and danced . Dulari was just sitting calmly and singing the female version sung by Geeta Dutt . Her calm and serene face remained in my memory . In the same film , years later , when Paro grew older [ played by etherial Suchitra Sen ] , she was again sitting and remembering Devdas . Again same Vaishnav saints came and started singing . Now the song was ” Sajan Ki Ho Gayi Gori ” . I am unable to forget these scenes , these two songs , melancholic face of Paro , played by Baby Naaz and Suchitra Sen respectively and of course Nana Palsikar and Dulari .

Then , years later I watched ” Padosan ” [ 1968 ] and ” Gopi ” [ 1973 ] . In both the films she played the maternal aunt of lead actors ; Sunil Dutt and Dilip Kumar . Memory of her earlier starrers ” Shehnai ” [ 1947 ] , and ” Devdas ” [ 1955 ] once again became fresh in my mind . It is not that I have seen only above mentioned 4 films . I have seen innumerable films of her . But these 4 remain in my memory .

Dulari as Mother Figure

Dulari as Mother Figure

A Kanyakubj Brahman from the Awadh region of Uttar Pradesh , she was born and brought up in Maharashtra . She spent her childhood in Nagpur , where she was born on 18th April 1928. Her name was Ambika but she was nick-named Rajdulari and later on only Dulari remained and the world knew her as Dulari .

Dulari ji’s first film was ‘Bombay Talkies’s’ famous movie ” Jhoola “  [ 1941 ] with Ashok Kumar . Later on she played Jairaj’s younger sister in a Bombay Talkies film Hamari Baat’ . She was also seen as the second lead in  ‘Amar Pictures’ film ‘Adaab Arz’ where her leading man was the famous singer Mukesh . Both the films were made in 1944 .
shayar

Later on she played small roles in films like ” Ghar ” [ 1945 ] , ” Kulkalank “  [ 1945 ] , ‘Ahinsa’, ‘Black Market’, ‘Namak’, ‘Pati Sewa’, ‘Rangeen Kahani’ [ all 1947 ] . But Dulari got her real due with ‘Filmistan’s super hit film ” Shehnai ” [ 1947 ] . She played Rehana’s elder sister in the movie and her leading man was Mehmood’s father Mumtaz Ali . As I mentioned earlier two immortal songs were picturized on her in this film . ” Aana Meri Jaan Meri Jaan , Sunday Ke Sunday “  and ” Jawaani Ki Rail Chali Jaaye Re “ .

After ” Shehnai “ she did films like ” Gunsundari ” , ” Mitti Ke Khilone ” , ” Naav’ ” [ all 1948 ] , ” Nanad Bhaujai ” , ” Shayar “  [ both 1949 ] , ” Apni Chhaya ” , ” Man Ka Meet “  [ both 1950 ] , ” Albela “  [ 1951 ], ” Anjaam ” , ” Bhoole Bhatke ” and ” Veer Arjun “  [ all 1952 ] .
Paapi
Dulari was seen in an important role in the movie ” Paapi ” [ 1953 ] . In this Ranjeet Movietone film Raj Kapoor played his career’s only double role. Nargis and Dulari played his two heroines .  After it she worked in Jeewan Jyoti ” [ 1953 ] , ” Devdas “  [ 1955 ] , ” Zindagi Ke Mele “  [ 1956 ] , ” Ek Gaon Ki Kahani ” , ” Johny Walker ” ,  ” Paying Guest “  [ all 1957 ] ,  ” Kavi Kalidas “  and ” Santaan ” [ 1959 ] .

Padosan

After 1959 , after two years hiatus , she started her second innings from 1961 and for the next 35 years, Dulari played many big and small roles in almost 135 films like ‘Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai’, ‘Mujhe Jeene Do’, ‘Apne Hue Paraye’, ‘Aap Aaye bahaar Aai’, ‘Aaye Din Bahaar Ke’, Anupama’, ‘Teesri Kasam’, ‘Padosan’, ‘Aradhna’, ‘Aaya Sawan Jhoom Ke’, ‘Chiraagh’, ‘Inteqaam’, ‘Aan Milo Sajna’, ‘Heer Ranjha’, ‘Johny Mera Naam’, ‘Caravan’, ‘Laal Patthar’, ‘Beimaan’, ‘Seeta Aur Geeta’, ‘Raja Rani’, ‘Ameer Gareeb’, ‘Haath Ki Safai’, ‘Deewar’, ‘Do Jasoos’, ‘Aahuti’, ‘Ganga Ki Saugandh’, ‘Biwi O Biwi’, ‘Naseeb’, ‘Prem Rog’, ‘Agar Tum Na Hote and ‘Dharmadhikari’. And then one day she quietly retired from the world of movies.

Later on she did only two films . ” Surya ” [ 1989 ] and ” Ziddi ” [ 1997 ] . Ziddi directed by Guddu Dhanoa is her last film . Thus from ” Jhoola “  [ 1941 ] to ” Ziddi ” [ 1997 ] , her career span was 56 years .

After a career spanning 56 years and after 171 hindi, 35 Gujarati, 3 Marathi and 1 Rajasthani film , she left Mumbai and went to live with her daughter in Indore . She also acted in a ‘Shri Adhikari Brothers’ serial called ‘Waqt Ki Raftaar’ .

During her final years Dulari ji was suffering from Alzheimer and was admitted to ICU in a hospital in PUNE in the last week of December ’12 where at the age of 85 she breathed her last on 18th January 2013 around 10 a.m. She was cremated on 19th January 2013 in the noon in Pune.

…………………………………………………………………………………
Few links of songs filmed on Dulari :
1 – aana meri jaan sunday ke sunday /shehnai/1947
2 – jawani ki rail chali jaaye/shehnai/1947
3 – aan milo aan milo shyam sanware/devdas/1955
4 – sajan ki ho gai gori/devdas/1955
5 – madhav bin saara brij soona/sautela bhai/1962
 …………………………………………………………………………………

I offer my condolences on behalf myself and on behalf of all the students and staff of VIDUR Acting Institute , which is known as Vidur’s Kreating Charakters . May God give eternal peace to Dulari Ji and strength to her daughter and other near and dear ones to bear this loss .

I can visualize a frail ,  85-year-old , lonely lady suffering from Alzheimer , sitting without a friend or companion in an old age home with blank eyes and waiting for some elusive loving one . Long windy nights of winter , dull and dusty days of summer and wet , pouring and dreary evenings of  rainy season must have come and gone  without any trace of succour . It is painful , very painful . Finally , only death could relieve her from her pain .

Rest in peace Dulari ji ! A tearful farewell from an ardent fan . I am happy that you left this cruel , selfish , cussed world . May , in next life , you get everything that you have ever desired for you .

[ While writing this blog , I have taken few facts and materials from the article " Aan Milo Aan Milo Shyam Sanware’-Dulari " , written by Shri Shishir Krishna Sharma for his ‘Sahara Samay’ column ‘kya bhooloon kya yaad karoon’ . I am indebted . ]

Zia Fariduddin Dagar

15 June 1932 – May 8, 2013

I must state in the beginning that I am not an expert on Indian Classical Music , whether Hindustani or Karnatak . I am just a connoisseur , an ardent fan . I was introduced to Classical music by my friend Shri Lakshmi Kant Tiwari . When we both were living in Deoria , my native place , we used to meet almost every evening and talk about classical music , its various aspects and about various singers . He introduced me to the world of Pandit Onkar Nath Thakur , Pandit Bheem Sen Joshi , Pandit Jasraj , Pandit Rajan Mishra and Pandit Sajan Mishra and of course Dagar Brothers . He gave me cassettes of Pandit Onkar Nath Thakur and Dagar brothers . And thus a life-long addiction to Dhrupad started .

Dhrupad  is the oldest existing form of north Indian classical music (Hindustani classical music) . Ustad Nasiruddin Khan Dagar was the man responsible for the resurrection of Dhrupad in modern India . After his early and untimely demise , his sons Ustad Nasir Moinuddin Dagar and Ustad Nasir Aminuddin Dagar carried the flag forward and revived the Dhrupad tradition .

Ustad Zia Fariduddin Dagar was the one more torch-bearer of Dhrupad in the illustrious family of Dagars . He was the most influential Dhrupad vocalist in India after the senior Dagar Brothers ; Ustad Nasir Moinuddin Dagar & Ustad Nasir Aminuddin Dagar.

He toured in India and abroad for the propagation of Dhrupad . He performed widely in India and abroad . By 1980, he had virtually settled down in Austria teaching Dhrupad in Austria and France. Once, during a visit to India, one of his disciples, the filmmaker, Mani Kaul came to him and pleaded with him to provide the background score for a film, The Cloud Door (1994) he was making on Madhya Pradesh. During the making of the film, they spent over two months in Madhya Pradesh . Later on he settled in Bhopal and taught at the Dhrupad Kendra, Bhopal, along with his elder brother, Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar for 25 years . There he trained students like the Gundecha Brothers.

He was awarded the 1994 Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in Hindustani music-Vocal by Sangeet Natak Akademi, India’s National Academy of Music, Dance and Drama.

Padma Shri- India’s fourth highest civilian honor been conferred upon him in year 2012 – but he turned it down, saying the government did not care about his seniority as he was chosen for it after much younger Dhrupad singers were conferred the honour.

He also received the Tansen Samman from the Madhya Pradesh government and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. In 2005, he was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the North American Dhrupad Association.

He was a distinguished guest faculty at ‘Dhrupad Sansar’, IIT Bombay for a span of 5 years.

Later on towards the fag-end of his career,  he was staying and teaching at the Dhrupad Gurukul near Panvel, which was built by his elder brother Ustad Z. M. Dagar and continued to perform in India and abroad untill his brief illness and death on 8th May 2013.

On behalf of all the students and staff of VIDUR Acting Institute , which is known as Vidur’s Kreating Charakters  , I offer my heart-felt condolences on the sad demise of the titanic figure of Dhrupad tradition .

I am also grateful to my friend Shri Lakshmi Kant Tiwari for introducing me to the world of Dagar Brothers and Dhrupad .

Rituparno Ghosh

English: Rituparno at MAMI festival

I was shocked beyond words to hear about the sad demise of Rituparno Ghosh . He was my favourite director of Bengali cinema post Satyajit Ray era . He died on 30 May 2013 in Kolkata after suffering a massive heart attack . He was 49 years old at the time of his death .

He started his career as a creative artist in advertisement agency. In 1992, his debut filmHirer Angti got released. In 1994 his next film Unishe April  “ released and it won National Film Award for Best Feature Film . In his career spanning almost two decades he won 12 national and some international awards .

The first film of Rituparno Ghosh , which I saw , wasBariwali ” [ 1999 ] . It moved me immensely . Kirron Kher’s poignant portrayal of a lonely housewife , who rents her old house for shooting and as shooting progressed , she falls for the director of the film and finally her fancy comes crashing when the cast and crew of the film leaves her house after last day of the shooting . She was devastated that the directors has no feelings for her . ” Bariwali ” is still fresh in my memory and it is etched permanently in my mind . It’s not for nothing that Kirron Kher got National Award for her performance .

This was my first brush with the world of Rituparno Ghosh .

The I watched Chokher Bali ” [ 2003 ] . During my adolescent years in Deoria , I had read the Hindi translation of the novel . It was named ” Aankh Ki Kirkiri ” . Character of female protagonist in the novel was very difficult . Ritu da , as he was fondly called , not only filmed the story beautifully , but he also extracted remarkable performance from Aishwarya Rai Bachchan .

Then I watched ” The Last Lear ” [ 2007 ] . It was very unusual film by typical bollywood standard . A remarkable performance by Amitabh Bachchan made this film important .

Out of all 24 films , which he made as a director or writer or producer , I have watched only 3 films . But even then Ritu da’s impact fails to get obfuscated from my psyche .

Here is the complete list of his films .

Filmography

” Hirer Angti ” [ 1992 ] , ” Unishe April ” [ 1994 ] , ” Dahan ” [ 1997 ] , ” Bariwali ” [ 1999 ] , ” Asukh ” [ 1999 ] , ” Utsab ” [ 2000 ] , ” Titli ” [ 2002 ] , ” Shubho Mahurat “  [ 2003 ] , ” Chokher Bali ” [ 2003 ] , ” Katha Deithili Ma ” [ 2003 ] , ” Raincoat ” [ 2004 ] , ” Antarmahal ” [ 2005 ] , ” Dosar ” [ 2006 ] , ” The Last Lear ” [ 2007 ] , ” Khela ” [ 2008 ] , ” Shob Charitro Kalponik ” [ 2008 ] , ” Abohoman ” [ 2010 ] , ” Noukadubi ” [ 2010 ] , ” Arekti Premer Golpo ” [ 2011 ] , ” Memories In March ” [ 2011 ] , ” Sunglass ” [ 2012 ] , ” Chitrangada ” [ 2012 ] , ” Jiban Smriti ” [ 2012 ] & ” Satyanveshi  ” [ 2013 ]

Month of May 2013 is important for Indian cinema . On May , 1913 first full-length feature filmRaja Harishchandra was released in Coronation Cinema , Girgaon , Mumbai [ then Bombay ] . India cinema celebrates its 100 years of existence this month .
It is sad that in the year when Indian cinema is celebrating its 100th years , world of Indian films lost 5 luminaries in this month .
It was not a very significant month either for Hindi films as for as box office collections are concerned . Out of all 11 released films , only ” Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani “ hits the bull’s-eye . ” Shootout At Wadala ” , ” Go Goa Goneand ” Aurangzeb “ were average hits . Rest 07 were flops .

Jiah Khan , A Life Snapped Abruptly

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           JUNE 09 , 2013           11.45 P.M.

Sitting in my study in Mumbai and trying to remember Jiah Khan is not easy at this juncture . I met Jiah 7/8 months back . I was approached by her manager and he requested me to train her as she was about to sign couple of big projects soon .

Maxim Magazine (December 2008) - Jiah Khan

Maxim Magazine (December 2008) – Jiah Khan

I had seen few scenes of Nishabd ” [ 2007 ] , her debut film . Then I watched  Ghajini ” [ 2008 ] . I had watched Housefull ” [ 2010 ] also . That was it . But that is her complete filmography . Just 3 films in 4 years . And it was not a conscious decision . She waited for 3 years for her next break . But the wait was in vain .

Ghajini (2008 film)

After getting call from her secretary , I called Jiah next day . Her mother answered the call . I went to meet Jiah Khan next day . I vividly remember her building , Sagar Sangeet in Juhu . I went to her first floor flat and was ushered in by Jiah’s mother . I sat on the sofa and then few moments later Jiah slowly walked in and sat in front of me .

As has been said by many , she was not a conventional beauty . But I found her stunning , very charming and elegant . She offered me tea and we talked about the modalities of the training . She requested me to start from the coming week .

I came out . But that coming week never came . She kept on postponing the classes . She always messaged me a day prior that since she is under weather , she wont be able to start classes. It went for a couple of weeks .

Finally I lost patience . And when she finally called me one day to start the class , I didn’t answer the call . I curtly messaged back that I have taken another tuition , as I was tired of waiting endlessly . She simply messaged back , ” Oh sorry , but I was really under the weather . “

Then I lost contact with her . I never cared to call back . I took her to be  another spoiled brat . But when I read about her suicide , I immediately remembered above mentioned event .

A sense of remorse engulfed me . Now I am feeling guilty . May be she was true . May be she was really not well . May be she needed people in her life . I would have been a positive anchor in her life . A caring teacher is sometimes more than a caring father . Had I been her tutor , may be the fate would have been different . But it was not destined to be .

I am sorry but I do have fiery temper . Not knowingly or consciously but I have made some mistakes in my life because of my temper . Saying no to Jiah Khan seems to be one of the biggest mistakes of my life . May be the troubled girl child needed an emotional anchor and I know that I could have been a very positive anchor in her life . But as I have said earlier , it was not destined to be .

On behalf of all the students and staff of VIDUR Acting Institute , which is known as Vidur’s Kreating Charakters  , I offer my condolences to Jiah’s family . VIDUR Editing Studio , VIDUR Club and VIDUR Theatre also join me in expressing grief . I apologise to her mother , who was so nice to me when I first met her on that day .

I still have Jiah Khan’s cell number but I have no gumption to call her mother . I have no courage to say sorry to her . Today , on a wet Sunday night , I am writing this obituary to express my guilt to one and all .

NEWS LETTER

I don’t know whether I deserve it or not but I seek forgiveness . Jiah’s eyes and her smiling face haunts me and it will torment me throughout my life . As a tutor I should have been more condescending , more understanding and more accommodating . I am 60 years old and she was just 25 .

Farewell destiny’s troubled child . I feel ashamed that I am also in the list of few people , who failed you .

Thinking About Advaniji !!

DSC01182

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           JUNE 13 , 2013           01.15 A.M.

On June 10 , 2013 , while sitting in my institute’s office , I suddenly heard a TV anchor’s voice . He said , ” Lal Krishna Advani resigns from all the posts of Bharatiya Janata Party [ BJP ] .”

English: cropped photograph of L K Advani with...

Shri Lal Krishna Advani outside his residence. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

I was shocked and dumbfounded . BJP without Advaniji or Advaniji without BJP is not comprehensible . I left every work and was glued to the TV set for a while . I watched the news for sometime and then started recollecting the incidents of past few days .

In BJP since almost 1 year there was a clamour for bigger role for Shri Narendra Modi . No sane person can find fault with this . But the picture was being painted as if Advaniji was against this . The fact of the matter is that Advaniji was solely responsible for Shri Narendra Modi’s elevation to the post of Chief Minister of Gujarat and he also saved Gujarat strongman from being sacked in the aftermath of Gujarat riots of 2002 . Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee wanted to remove him from the post . So how can he be against Shri Modi ?

Every BJP leader , who were assembled at Goa for the party’s National Executive Committee  meeting , took a decision to appoint Shri Narendra Modi as the Chairman of  The Campaign Committee for the 2014 Lok Sabha election . Since Advaniji didn’t attend the National Executive meet , he was painted as a villain , a greedy old man who was hankering for power and pelf. There was even a demonstration in front of his New Delhi house by some organization called Modi Sena .

I was pained by the sight . It was unbelievable and unthinkable few years back . No sane BJP worker will demonstrate against Advaniji . But some Modi Sena staged protest and instead of condemning it immediately and wholeheartedly , BJP leaders simply distanced themselves from it . That is all for this deplorable act .

Then , when asked about Advaniji’s health , BJP spokes-person Prakash Javdekar said in Goa , ” jab mausam badalta hai to log beemar pad jaate hain ” . I simply ask , is it fair ? ” …………….. mausam badalta hai ……………. ” indicates some connotation and it carries unambiguous meaning in the given present context . A Prakash Javdekar commenting like this and sarcastically taunting Advaniji , is deplorable . In my opinion it all started after the 2009 Lok Sabha defeat .

The then former Goa chief minister Shri Manohar Parrikar reportedly told a local news channel Prudent Media, “Pickle tastes good when it is left to mature for a year. But if you keep it for more than two years, it turns rancid…Advaniji’s period is more or less over. Another couple of years and after that he should act as a guardian or mentor for the party.  It’s like Sachin Tendulkar.  However mature an innings he may play, he will have to stop playing sometime.”

Parrikar said though he respected Advani for his integrity, the party should give importance to younger leaders. “I am not against elders, but the BJP should give prominence to leaders who are between 40 and 60 years.”

[ I have taken this above quoted piece from DNA of September 22 , 2009 . ]

Therefore there seems to be a conspiracy against Advaniji . I think that is the reason he took a painful decision of resigning from the Bharatiya Janata Party , which he nurtured whole of his life . He resigned on Monday , that is on June 10 , 2013 .

What followed afterwords is more sinful and shameful . Verbal abuse on twitter was unleashed . Obnoxious postings on facebook by some Rastra Dharma Rakshak and it’s patron Dhiraj Desmukh started with ferocity . This Rastra Dharma Rakshak supports Shri Narendra Modi and posts obscene comments about  Advaniji . Some comments are not even worthy of writing . Again a deafening silence by BJP on such posts is baffling .

A day after his resignation , when efforts were on to persuade Advaniji to take back his resignation , a certain  Prabhat Jha , the vice Prsident of BJP , said that one individual is not above the party . In fact this sermon is being dished out from several other sources also . Can I ask why the party was not above the individual when it got just 2 seats in 1984 ? From 2 seats in 1984 to a first BJP led government in 1998 , and to 182 seats in 1999 , Advaniji worked tirelessly . May I know why party was not above the individual in those momentous but dark and futureless 14 /15 years ?

He is accused to be driven by personal agenda . From 2 seats to 182 seats , from a party on the periphery , to the ruling party at the centre , he led BJP to unimaginable glories and when the clamour for him to become the Prime Minister was reaching a crescendo , he proposed Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s name . And the same person is now called by some minions and upstarts as driven by ambition and self – agenda .

Corrected few errors.

Map of Indian Provinces as Ruled by Political Parties (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Even today BJP rules 4 provinces [ Gujarat , Madhya Pradesh , Chhattisgarh and Goa ] on its own and 3 provinces [ Punjab , Bihar and Nagaland ] as dominant coalition partner . But votaries of new order say that BJP lost 2004 and 2009 parliamentary elections and its seat tally came down . It won only 138 seats in 2004 and 116 seats in 2009 . But such people conveniently forget the gradual ascent of the BJP . 2 seats in 1984 , 89 seats in 1989 , 120 seats in 1991 , 161 seats in 1996 , 178 seats in 1998 , 182 seats in 1999 , 138 seats in 2004 and 116 seats in 2009 . Even if seat tally came down to 116 in 2009 , it was much better than 2 seats in 1984 .

But political calculations are driven by convenience . And the current convenience is winning parliamentary elections in 2014 . And some people feel that for this task you need Shri Narendra Modi’s face .

It is absolutely fine . Every one welcomed the decision . But to anoint a new leader , you need not ridicule and mock the aging patriarch . This is India and respecting elders is our tradition . That is precisely the reason that people cutting across part line are supporting Advaniji and showing sympathy. Not only Indian National Congress but even CPI and CPI-M showed empathy towards him . Urdu press , which is not favourably dispensed towards Advaniji , was sympathetic and supportive . They called this behaviour of sidelining him unfaithfulness and betrayal of an aging senior .

I am a non entity . But I was saddened by the turn of events . I am only trying to raise my voice against the ridicule , insult and mocking of Advaniji , who is now 85 . We should not left him in the cold . To play a Balraj Madhok on him is not possible in this age of social media and if some one , driven by personal agenda , is trying to do this , he should be condemned .

I am raising my voice fully knowing that I may be in minority . But  TRUTH ALWAYS WINS .

” SATYAMEVA JAYATE NANRITAM “

FULL EDITNG STUDIO

NEWS LETTERI , along with my above mentioned institutions , wholeheartedly condemn the verbal attacks on Advaniji . After writing this blog I am relieved of my guilt . At least I have raised my voice against the insult being heaped on the aging patriarch of the family .

I am happy Advaniji , I am not in the list of people , who failed you at this juncture of your life .

My Association With ” Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani “

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           JUNE 16 , 2013           01.55 A.M.

” Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani “ got released in the last week of May 2013 and it took the nation by storm . It was , though , expected to do good business at the box office but success of this gigantic proportion was not expected .

It collected 62.11 crore in the opening weekend itself . It went on to collect 100 crore in the first week of its release and now it is the 2nd fastest 100 crore earner till date . Its overseas weekend collection stands at 22.10 crore . It is Ranbir Kapoor‘s biggest opener in overseas . It is the biggest opener of 2013 till date .

It is the 3rd biggest all-time grosser in the history of Hindi cinema .

Top 3 grossers in India: #3Idiots – 202 cr, #EkThaTiger – 199 cr, #YehJawaaniHaiDeewani – 155.28 cr [still counting].

Because of the humongous success of ” Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani “ , Ranbir Kapoor has become the biggest star in overseas after 3 Khans ; Shah Rukh Khan , Salman Khan and Aamir Khan .

I have every reason to celebrate this success . My name appears in the titles of the film .  I am billed as Diction Coach . My elder son Abhinav Chaturvedi’s name is also there in the credits .

I spent almost a month in Manali with the unit . Ranbir Kapoor is my old student . During this period I worked extensively with Kalki Koechlin and briefly with some others stars .

With Ranbir Kapoor before " Saawariya "

With Ranbir Kapoor before ” Saawariya “

Kalki Koechlin in "Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani"

Kalki Koechlin in “Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani”

It has become the norm for acting trainers to revel in fake successes . Revellers beg their friends to promote their film on social networking sites so that they get more shows . And in spite of the limited shows , they brag about its so-called stupendous success . If a film collecting a paltry 50 Lakh is cause to revel for revellers , then I should be ecstatic  because ” Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani “ is the 3rd highest grosser of all time . At the time of writing of this blog it has garnered 155.28 crore and it is still going strong .

To present its step by step and day-to-day success , I am re-producing some relevent tweets from the twitter-handle of Shri Taran Adarsh , one of the most respected film journalist of our country . It is for the sceptics , who love to blow their cacophonous trumpets :

  1. #YehJawaaniHaiDeewani Fri 19.45 cr, Sat 20.16 cr, Sun 22.5 cr, Mon 13 cr, Tue 12 cr, Wed *est* 11 cr. Total: 98.11 cr. Nears 100 cr mark!

  2. NEW ZEALAND: #YehJawaaniHaiDeewani Wknd NZ$ 80,648, Mon NZ$ 25,535, Tue NZ$ 16,256, Wed NZ$ 5,415. Total: NZ$ 127,854 [Rs 57.71 lacs]. Super

  3. AUSTRALIA: #YehJawaaniHaiDeewani Wknd A$ 268,224, Mon A$ 38,125, Tue A$ 54,276, Wed A$ 21,459. Total: A$ 382,084 [Rs 2.06 cr]. Wonderful!

  4. UK: #YehJawaaniHaiDeewani Wknd £ 408,491, Mon £ 42,015, Tue £ 57,321, Wed £ 70,971. Total: £ 578,798 [Rs 5.08 cr]. Excellent!

  5. So #YehJawaaniHaiDeewani will achieve its target of 100 cr today [Thu]. Before Week 1 comes to a close… Super!

  6. #YehJawaaniHaiDeewani Wednesday *early estimates* seem like 10 cr +. Wait-n-watch!

  7. At the rate it is faring, #YehJawaaniHaiDeewani should touch 100 cr mark by Thu noon. Before Week 1 comes to a close!

  8. #YehJawaaniHaiDeewani Fri 19.45 cr, Sat 20.16 cr, Sun 22.5 cr, Mon 13 cr, Tue 12 cr. Total: 87.11 cr. MONSTROUS HIT!

  9. Incidentally, #HumTum [2004], #BuntyAurBabli [2005] and #Fanaa [2006] were also released in the last week of May.

Rastra Dharma Rakshak : A Denunciation

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           JUNE 17 , 2013           00.30 A.M.

“I do not agree with what you have to say, but I’ll defend to the death your right to say it .”  – Voltaire

I was closely following the political turmoil which gripped BJP after its Goa National executive Committee meet . I was particularly peeved when some disgruntled youth protested in front of Advaniji’s house in New Delhi . The banners they used informed us that they belonged to a little known organization called Modi Sena .

One can draw the inference that officially BJP or Shri Narendra Modi has nothing to do with it . But I remember one more protest of the same nature against Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee . When there was a rebellion against Shri Keshu Bhai Patel , Atalji went to Gandhi Nagar to broker peace . Keshu Bhai Patel was removed and Suresh Mehta was anointed as Chief Minister of Gujarat . There were protests against Atalji . When he was heading for airport , his car was gheraoed by few slogan shouting youth . At that time also protesters shouted obscene slogans against him . At that time also we were informed that they were some disgruntled youth and they don’t belong to the party . And we believed .

But some disgruntled youth again appeared and shouted slogans against Advaniji . Coincidence can’t happen again and again . Who is responsible for this act . How come few disgruntled youth appear on the scene when something happens which is not liked by someone . And yes , they have audacity to protest against Atalji and Advaniji and that too with impunity .

Apart from the protesting disgruntled youth , there is one organization called Rastra Dharma Rakshak also in the arena . If you write or say anything against a leader which is not liked by them , they will hurl abuses and post extremely obscene comments on facebook . You can visit their facebook page to get first hand knowledge :

http://www.facebook.com/hindudharma.rakshak

I am curious to know about the Rastra Dharma Rakshak and Shri Dhiraj Desmukh , who seems to be heading this organization . They proclaim to admire Shri Anna Hazare , Baba Ramdev and Shri Narendra Modi . But in order to admire above mentioned great personalities , you need not ridicule or insult the other ones .

Previously they used to post obscene comments and insulting  pictures of Shri Manmohan Singh and Shrimati Sonia Gandhi . In democracy you can oppose any person or leader and even criticize them . But it should be done in a decent , civilized way . To Photoshop any leader’s photo and then posting it on social networking sites is unethical .

Their bent of  mind is puzzling . Is it necessary to support everyone whom they support ? Are we duty bound to acquiesce to their dictates ? If it is so , is it good for democracy ? Or it is democracy at all ?

If Advaniji says that he is not well , so he is not well . If he doesn’t want to go to a particular meet , it is his choice . He doesn’t need Rastra Dharma Rakshak’s nod for that or their permission to skip the meet . Any one wanting to know their bent of mind can send them friend request on facebook and see what they write . It is filthy . It is vulgar . It is uncouth . It is demeaning to even reproduce those postings here .

Shri Lal Krishan Advani

Yesterday the man to be abused was Shri Lal Krishan Advani . Today the goal-post has changed . It is now turn of Shri Nitish Kumar . I also wish that in the interest of the nation BJP and JD ( U ) should work together . But if  JD ( U ) wants to break the relationship , it is their choice . But all of a sudden according to Rastra Dharma Rakshak , Nitish Kumar is supposed to be getting money from Pakistan . May I demand to know  why was it not reported earlier ?

English: Nitish Kumar

In politics it is your right to criticise . But to rebuke , ridicule or insult is neither your right or your prerogative .

I denounce Rastra Dharma Rakshak . They have no place in democracy . Their autocratic behaviour poses dangerous signal . I do respect Shri Anna Hazare , Shri Narendra Modi and Baba Ramdev . But I won’t allow myself to be forced to like or admire them . In fact years ago , when the embers of Gujarat riots were still hot and burning , I wrote two blog post in support of Shri Narendra Modi . Anyone can visit the Political Category of my blog post and can read the blogs .

1 – In Defence of Narendra Modi : March 24 , 2010

2 – Narendra Modi & His Detractors : December 20 , 2012

There was another post which I wrote when Kokrajhar riots happened :

1 – Kokrajhat & Tyranny of Distance : September 06 , 2012

But I refused to be dictated by Rastra Dharma Rakshak and its patron Shri Dhiraj Desmukh . To admire Shri Narendra Modi , I need not be ridiculing Shri Advaniji . As I have written in the beginning :

“I do not agree with what you have to say, but I’ll defend to the death your right to say it .”  – Voltaire

If it is right of Rastra Dharma Rakshakt to admire someone , then it applies to me also . They cannot dictate terms or force me into subjugation . I may be small . I may be alone . I may be in minority but I still have the mind of my own which refuses to be cowed down by a Rastra Dharma Rakshak . I finish my blog by remembering a poem written by Dr. Dharam Vir Bharti .

Visiting Lar After 22 Years

DEORIA – UTTAR PRADESH – INDIA           JUNE 30 , 2013           08.30 P.M.

Yesterday on June 29 , 2013 I visited Lar , a small town in Deoria district . It was a visit which happened after almost 22 years . So naturally when I was passing through the rain – washed roads of Lar , several floodgates of memory suddenly got opened and I was inundated with myriads thoughts , various feelings – some fresh , some a little bit obfuscated .

Main Road Lar - Deoria

Main Road Lar – Deoria

I vividly remember my first visit of the town , which I visited 39 years back . My father died in February 1974 and then I started managing my ancestral properties . In that connection I paid visit to Sohagara , a village in Bihar on the bank of river Gandak , which is the village of my forefathers . It was noon time in April 1974 . I alighted from the bus in the blistering heat and proceeded for my onward journey to Sohagara . Since there were no pucca roads or any vehicles to ferry me to Sohagara ,  I started my journey on foot .

I passed through the market . It was first time that I saw Lar town and the bazar , which is situated on the both sides of a narrow pathway . I crossed the bazar and took the road connecting Lar to Chanuki Ghat . After crossing Gandak river I set foot on the dusty road of Sohagara village .

Chhoti Gandak River- Sohagara is on the right of the river

Chhoti Gandak River- Sohagara is on the right of the river

Main Road of Sohagara

Main Road of Sohagara

It happened 39 years back but visuals are still fresh in my memory as if it all happened recently . After that day it became almost a monthly ritual to pass through Lar for onwards journey to Sohagara . In those days I had no friends or acquaintances in Lar . Barring a Mithai / tea shop near Bus Station , I had no place to even sit for some time .

After few years , around 1985 I started working in social field . Now  my visits to Lar became more frequent . From monthly visit to the town , it became almost weekly . I started interacting with people . During my those social service days , I got to know Shri Bhanu Ji and various other people of Lar .

Suddenly life took an unknown turn . It took another route ; a route less travelled , a route not well-known , a route very daunting , a road full of pitfalls . I left Deoria for Mumbai [ then Bombay ] in 1989 and after that my association with Lar was snapped abruptly . I was not able to visit Lar . I did visit Sohagara but I always took another road through Majhauli . Relationships , friendships and all the connections got frozen and they remained in frozen state since then . Lar did remain in my memory but as I said earlier everything remained frozen , dormant .

I was busy in Mumbai . Running acting institute is not an easy task . It took most of my time . Because of the nature of my work , I got used to internet and became active on various social networking sites . Suddenly and unexpectedly life again took another turn and a turn for better . Bhanu Ji’s son Suryendu Kumar caught hold of me through facebook . Ice started melting suddenly . As if ice – age ended and warmth of  life was there again for everyone to feel . Relationships came out of deep-freezer and once again got fresh lease of  life .

In June 2013 I reached Deoria for my annual trip and Bhanu Ji and his son Suryendu Kumar came to meet me . They were kind enough to invite me to inaugurate the new session of their school , ANJANEYA PUBLIC SCHOOL .

I readily accepted the invitation . I started in the morning from Deoria , reached Lar around 8.30 . The town has changed drastically . Chanuki Mod , which was a desolate corner 39 years ago , is bustling with activity and is changed beyond recognition .

IMG00094-20130629-1225

I had tea at Bhanu Ji’s house . Then we proceeded for Matiyara .

Fate is strange . Destiny is mysterious . They play curious games with hidden hands . Once again I was travelling on the same road , which I took 39 years ago for my journey to Sohagara . When I left Deoria , I thought that I would never be able to see the road again . But as I said , destiny plays strange and curious games . 39 years ago it was blistering heat of April and I was walking on the dusty road . And this time it was wet , rain – washed June and I was travelling in a car . But the road was same .

Anjaneya Public School , Matiyara , Lar , Deoria

Anjaneya Public School , Matiyara , Lar , Deoria

I am happy that I agreed to go for the function . It was nice to meet bright boys and girls of ANJANEYA PUBLIC SCHOOL . It was heart-warming to meet some old acquaintances . It was nostalgic to travel on the same road after 22 years .

At the Chautha of Mohit Ji

At the Chautha of Mohit Ji

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           JULY 11 , 2013           00.15 A.M.

From the annual trip to my home town Deoria , Uttar Pradesh , I returned to Mumbai on July 02 , 2013 . On July 03 when I reached my acting institute in the morning , I got the shocking news of passing away of Mohit ji . He died of cardiac arrest in the early morning of July 02 , 2013 at the age of 51 .

I was stunned . I was dumbfounded and numb . It was beyond imagination . He was 9 years younger to me . How could he leave us so soon ? 51 is too young to go . 51 is no age to leave this world . 51 is not the age to say good-bye .

In the evening I got a message from his sister that he would be cremated on July 04 , 2013 at electric crematorium , Shivaji Park , Dadar . I reached there in the morning . After some time an ambulance entered in the compound . It was carrying his dead body . Mohit ji in an ambulance ? So unbearable ! So painful ! So sad !

His body was carried out on a stretcher and ah , it opened floodgates of memory to inundate me completely .

I vividly remember my first encounter with him . I left Assha Chandra ji in the beginning of 1990 and started working with Mr. Kishore Namit Kapoor . If I am remembering correctly , it was the beginning of 1992 when Mohit ji came to meet Mr. Kishore Namit Kapoor with Mr. Jag Mohan Mattoo , a film director . Later on he started working there as an acting instructor . And slowly our friendship grew .

So it was a 20-year-long association with Mohit ji . We were in the same field , in the same profession and for most of the time in the same institute . But there was no jealousy , animosity or rivalry between us . I can say with all honesty that somewhere I might have erred in my association with him . At some juncture of life , I might have failed him as a friend . But he never ever erred or failed me as a friend .

In later years he left Mr. Kishore Namit Kapoor and joined Mr. Anupam Kher for a brief period . During last years of his life he was mostly freelancing and training some very brilliant and bright star-kids .

It is painful to say good-bye to such a dear friend . It is heart-wrenching to bid adieu to a colleague , who was much younger . It was agonizing  to see him dead . It was sad to see his lifeless body being carried into the electric chamber and coming out as ash in an earthen pot . His smiling face was lost forever . He will not be seen ever again .

It seems surreal even today as I am writing this blog . It all seemed unreal when I saw his dead body . Though hallucinatory , but it seems that Mohit ji is still alive . I feel that any moment he will walk in and say , ” hello , Vidur ji , how are you ? ” This is the way he used to address me always .

It is painful to address him in past tense . It is sad to even think that he is gone and we will never meet again in this life .

After his cremation I returned with heavy heart . Then there was chautha and prayer meeting on July 05 , 2013 at Arya Samaj temple , Santacruz . It is painful that so many old acquaintances didn’t turn up either for the cremation or for chautha . A Lab Assistant was conspicuous by his absence . He had no time for a departed colleague and associate , who had given his sweat , blood and youth to him and his now declining institution .

It is sad . It is cruel . It is cussed . But this is life . This is the way film industry works . This is the way the Lab Assistant operates .

Some friends have forgotten you Mohit ji but I shall always remember you as a dear friend .

Farewell my friend !

Good-bye Mohit ji !

You were extremely talented acting trainer . You were definitely better than me . But destiny was cruel to you . You never got what you so rightly deserved . Sorry to say but you were destiny’s neglected child .

Adieu destiny’s neglected child !

When Even Insult Had Class

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           JULY 17 , 2013           00.15 A.M.
Since past 8 / 9 months , for no fault of mine , I have become target of abuse on various social micro-blogging sites . There are only 2 / 3 people but they do it with religious fervour and with crusader’s zeal .
When you strive to do something worthwhile and chart a different path , insecure and inferior people become jealous . They feel threatened and so they try to belittle you . They attack you with all the squalor at their command . They threaten you with all the venom accumulated since ages . They try to put you down so that they can claim , ” look , he is down and out . He is nothing . He is insignificant .”
These uncouth zombies resort to unparliamentary language and behaviour at slightest pretext . Abuse becomes their most potent weapon . Filth becomes their armour . Cuss words become their shield . And aggression becomes their war strategy .
I have only one weapon to counter such people and their innuendoes . It is silence . And silence is golden . I have remained silent despite gravest provocations . Even my son was attacked and abused recently. If I have to fight someone , I would never ever attack their sons , daughters , parents or relatives . But those , who were not taught or seen decent behaviour in their entire life , can do this with impunity . They can use cuss words . They can use filthy language . They can resort to falsehood to remain relevant . They can spread canards for self-interest . They can gang up with equally despicable cohorts to denigrate you . They can stoop to any level because there is no level .
Suddenly one day I came across this posting of Major Retd. Pravin Singh on the facebook . I knew some of these incidents earlier but I had forgotten them . I am reproducing them with gratitude .
When Even Insult Had Class
***********************************
These glorious insults are from an era before the English language became boiled down to 4-letter words.
A member of Parliament to Disraeli: “Sir, you will either die on the gallows or of some unspeakable disease.” “That depends, Sir,” said Disraeli, “whether I embrace your policies or your mistress.”
“He has all the virtues I dislike and none of the vices I admire.” – Winston Churchill
I have never killed a man, but I have read many obituaries with great pleasure.” Clarence Darrow
“He has never been known to use a word that might send a reader to the dictionary.” – William Faulkner (about Ernest Hemingway)
“Thank you for sending me a copy of your book; I’ll waste no time reading it.” – Moses Hadas
I didn’t attend the funeral, but I sent a nice letter saying I approved of it.” Mark Twain”He has no enemies, but is intensely disliked by his friends..” – Oscar Wilde

“I am enclosing two tickets to the first night of my new play; bring a friend, if you have one.” – George Bernard Shaw to Winston Churchill.

“Cannot possibly attend first night, will attend second … if there is one.” – Winston Churchill, in response.

“I feel so miserable without you; it’s almost like having you here.” -Stephen Bishop

“I’ve just learned about his illness. Let’s hope it’s nothing trivial.” -Irvin S. Cobb

“He is not only dull himself; he is the cause of dullness in others.” -Samuel Johnson

“He is simply a shiver looking for a spine to run up.” – Paul Keating (MY favorite, MJ)

“In order to avoid being called a flirt, she always yielded easily.” – Charles, Count Talleyrand

“His mother should have thrown him away and kept the stork..” – Mae West

“Some cause happiness wherever they go; others, whenever they go.” – Oscar Wilde

“He uses statistics as a drunken man uses lamp-posts… for support rather than illumination.” – Andrew Lang (1844-1912)

“I’ve had a perfectly wonderful evening. But this wasn’t it.” – Groucho

Alas , these days the above mentioned parliamentary taunts and sarcasm is missing in people . An uncouth sycophant , who works as a factotum for his equally uncultured master, when reprimanded by some students for abusing me , said with his abominable toothy grin , “  I don’t care for age . If someone was born 20/30/40 years before my birth , its none of my fault . “

Yes , it is none of their fault . They were not trained in civilized behaviour either by their family or by their teachers . They are not accustomed to decent behaviour . May be they have never ever respected their elders in their entire life . Yes , they are not cultured by tradition . May be it is in their blood . May be it is in the family . May be it is the trait which they have inherited .

I pity them . I try to ignore them . They should be avoided like Biblical Satan . They should be quarantined in some remote corner of this terra firma . They should be banished from our existence because their knowledge of English is questionable . Their vocabulary is limited . Their upbringing is doubtful . Their decency is untraceable . Their behaviour is crass . And their education is peripheral . They need sympathy and not anger . They should be pardoned because they are yet to evolve as human beings . For them I must quote Jesus Christ . When he was being crucified by Roman soldiers , he famously said , ” Father , forgive them , for they do not know what they do . “

I take care that students and staff of VIDUR Acting Institute , which is known as Vidur’s Kreating Charakters  , should learn to respect their elders . They should be cultured and civilized . VIDUR Editing Studio , VIDUR Club and VIDUR Theatre would also like to affirm that uncouth and indecent behaviour is not going to be our trait ever .

For those who are abusive , who are uncouth , who are not civilized enough and who are not so decent , I again quote Jesus Christ , ” Father , forgive them , for they do not know what they do . “

One must remember famous saying of Tomas Eloy Martinez of Argentina – ” Whenever there is a hero , there is a traitor.”
