MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA MARCH 13, 2016 07.50 P.M.
I read MAHABHARATAM in my childhood days. First time I read it in Hindi when I was in 8th standard. At that time I was more interested in story that the philosophy of GITA or teachings of BHISHMA.
I read it again during the summer vacation after I gave High School examination. This time I was able to understand the philosophical part also. Character of BHISHMA PITAMAH fascinated me. A boy , who took vow of celibacy and never broke it, an old warrior , who fought a fierce battle and led it at the age of 124 years , made a fascinating , interesting story. As a human being , he was the only one , who could decide and actually chose date , month and time of his death. It never happened before him. It never happened after him. In fact it wont happen ever again.
During MAHABHARATA war his age was somewhere between 85 to 150 years. Most common belief is that he was 124 years old , when he fought the epic battle. He chose his day and time of his death and then died on the bed of arrows : SHAR AHAIYA .
What a life !! What a personality !!
I specially like his last conversation with YUDHISHTHIR , which he delivered when he was on bed of arrows. It was regarding RAJ DHARMA [ Duties & Ethics of a King ] . I like it very much.
But I read MAHABHARAT , published by Geeta Press, Gorakhpur, in Sanskrit with Hindi translation . Suddenly , last night I found 36 edicts of BHISHMA PITAMAH compiled by BHIMAKARMA in his twitter-handle :
I copied the tweets and posting them here for the perusal of my blog readers.
Bheeshma mentions 36 virtues of an ideal king to Yudhishthira.

[ These edicts of BHISHMA PITAMAHA have been taken from the twitter handle of BHIMAKARMA :
